I've learnt a lot from Tombie over the years and also had a couple of discussions based on difference of opinion. I wouldn't call them arguments cause they were never heated but rather thoughts and ideas thrown back and forth, which is exactly what a forum should be IMO.
Problem with a forum however is that it is a BS environment where people are able to make any statement, pass it as fact and ultimately infect others with BS information. In saying that it is all part and parcel of a forum. On the patrol forum every land rover breaks down everywhere and are **** offroad blah blah yet few have any personal experience.
I don't know for a fact but based on his past decisions I'd say he's just relaxing and letting all of us talk **** whilst he's enjoying a cold onesmart man me thinks.
In saying that this forum is a more educational place with him on it, benefiting those of us that are ignorant regarding certain land rover "quirks". Knowledge is learned through experience and overtime, Tombie needs to come back and continue sharing that knowledge. He's one of the few that you listen too!

is it a failure of this forum when knowledgeable people like tombie leave due to petty arguments?

It could be, but not the forum, just a select few members (generally newer ones) that seem to get a huge post count up in a short matter of time that frustrate me, because the posts aren't informative or helpful i find, just pushy and confronting. But thats my opinion.
After 12 years on here, i have had a couple of spells where i never felt like logging on, have even thought about hanging up my boots!
I don't think so Eevo...... to me, that's a very over simplified view.
It's not just here Mike has pulled back on, you'll find he is more scarce in places like Facebook as well...... and it's not just as simple as "petty arguments". I think its a matter of enjoyment and time priorities.
This place, just like everywhere else on the net evolves and changes - the types of users and types of conversations vary. I know in the 15 or so years I've been around here, many of us have had times their interest has dropped off - I wandered away for some time.
I think you'll find Mike has just decided that he has more important things to do at the moment....
I hope he returns one day..... but much of his knowledge is still available here for those that can use the search functions - and there are a heap of other knowledgeable users still here![]()
