I could have sworn I've used it in high, but it has been a while since ive needed it!

The car will only auto lift in low range and does it for any of the off road modes. Rock Crawl prompts you to use low range but doesn't require it to work. However, as with all the TR settings, they only optimize the car properly for off road driving when in low range. You can read it in the FAQ's I think but a lot of the settings are changed specifically for off road when in low range.
This is the case for other settings but not Rock Crawl, for which low range is mandatory.

I can't select Rock Crawl on my L322 unless in low range, but get a prompt suggesting low range when mud/ruts is selected.
I've used rock crawl on just 2 occasions and was very pleased with the results. Not sure if it automatically went into low range or not but the first time was on a beach with very soft sand and I was feeling stuffed and didn't want to dig.... put it in rock crawl and the vehicle just gradually went reversed with no help from me on the throttle.
Next was at a campsite where if you take the wrong track you end up in a lot of pebble shale.... and I did just that with our van on the back! And all the unstoppable unbreakable drivers were watching with big grins on their ugly mugs. :(
Into rock crawl and just gradually drove through and out safely much to the delight of a D3 owner who was watching. :) And me.
Guess whose ugly mug had the biggest grin on it then? :)

I just checked my D4 and you are correct. It prompts for low range to be selected and doesn't activate Rock Crawl in high range. I've never tried using it in high range because I use low range anyway for any off roading apart from very easy hard sand beaches or the like.
