Question Nanocom Evolution suitable for D3/4

    Hi all,

Couldn't find the answer to this searching hence the question:

We are currently looking at D3/4's and I've been considering the maintenance/repair side of them. On our old Defender and Td5 Discovery the Nanocom Evolution diagnostic unit has been brilliant. I note that they have an Unlock Code for the D3 and 4 available at significant expense (compared to the earlier model vehicles). Can anyone advise if it is worthwhile/suitable diagnostic device for these vehicles or is there an alternative product to consider?

I’m an IIDTool fanboy. It’s awesome, but I have no experience of Nanocom so I can not compare the two

I upgraded by Nanocom to the D4 when I changed over from my D2a. I had to buy a new cable and the new licence. It worked at the time to edit the CCF for a few changes I made at the time, but I have not needed to use it for a couple of years... I think it was about $600 to upgrade it? For that sort of money, these days it would be better to just go to the GAP tool. It seems to have much more functionality than the Nanocom. You may be able to recover some cost by on-selling your Nanocom to a D2 owner.

GAP also lets you transfer the license to your new vehicle free of charge. Mine was VIN locked to the D4, now it is VIN locked to my D5.

Nanocom has no VIN locks, so an advantage to Nanocom there I suppose. You just need to purchase a licence for the vehicle model (ie D2, D3/4 etc)

Fantastic comments so far, thanks all.

The Nanocom Evolution Mk1 that I already have won't be going anywhere as my D2a definitely won't be leaving us so it will still be very needed! We are looking to replace our 2011 PK Ford Ranger with a Disco 3 or 4. I made the mistake of arranging a test drive in a D4 with the TDV6 3.0L and 8 speed automatic transmission so now the ladies expectations are rather high... Personally I'm currently preferring a later model D3 preferably in HSE spec...

Looking on the Nanocom website to enable (unlock) the D3 or D4 I would need:
    Unlock code - AUD $313.10 each - seperate code for D3 < Shop - NANOCOM Diagnostics > and D4 < Shop - NANOCOM Diagnostics >.
Can Bus Lead VCI 4 < Shop - NANOCOM Diagnostics > - AUD $80.60 plus freight, GST and import duty.
Total therefore around AUD $393.70 plus freight, GST and import duty just to enable the unit that I already have...

Or an entire replacement unit (which upgrades me to the newer slim design) for AUD $695.95 for D3 < Shop - NANOCOM Diagnostics > or D4 specifically < Shop - NANOCOM Diagnostics >.

Google indicates to me that GAP and IDDTool are one and the same? Or more specifically GAP Diagnostic is the company and IIDTool the product. Looks like it's been superseded now by IIDTool BT and Pro < https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/products/iidtool/ >.

A quick Google search and read of threads on various forums indicates that the IIDTool is very popular and well supported. Looks like it is to D3/4 what the Nanocom is to the D2...

Priced well at around AUD $562.87 plus freight, GST and import duty based on XE Currency conversion < https://www.xe.com/currencyconverter...rom=CAD&To=AUD > and the sites listed CAD price < https://www.gap-diagnostic.com/shop/iidtool-bt/ >.

I suppose then one has to get the Bell Auto Services Performance Remap Tune < https://bellautoservices.co.uk/store...7l-tdv6-remap/ > to suit too...!

Thanks for the responses and guidance.

I had a Nanocom Evo for my D2, and considered buying the D4 cable and license. But for just a little bit more I could get the Bluetooth iiD Tool, which is what I bought. Used LR Off-road in Australia as they were (Are?) the cheapest Gap Diagnostic BT IID Tool. (Price inc shipping and GST) – LR Off-Road Australia delivery took about 3 weeks, which they warned about on their website. It’s a lot easier and less clunky to use than the Nanocom Evo.

It should be noted that Blackbox now have a new tool for Canbus vehicles called Rovacom-IQ, I have no idea how good/bad this is to use but it looks very similar to the iiD Tool Rovacom IQ - Diagnostic equipment - Diagnostic Tools

I've had the Rovacom IQ for a few weeks now, but have been too busy to do any more than look at the live data. Software updates for the App and the IQ are virtually weekly which is only to be expected for a new bit of kit.
From what I can see, the functionality supersedes the Nanocom Evo (which I found to be a great tool).
I have no experience of the GAP IID device, so cannot make any comparison. I went with Blackbox Solutions as I had an EAS kicker for the LSE which I was quite happy with.

Sounds familiar. Ended up with a 2008 D3 SE. Rather refined over the 2001 D2.

What did you end up doing in the end with the diagnostic tool?
