I persisted with mine to get 70K out of them but was not pleased to find that I had been driving on 2 with quite a hole in the inside edge of the tread and cracks all around the top of the inside sidewalls of the 2 tyres that were last on the rear. I know that rear tyres get pelted with rocks thrown-up by the front tyres but can't explain all the cracks. I suspect the holes developed from early cracks that progressed into the tread.
I'll throw my 20c in the mix with this take - totally different from most offered.
The title of this thread is quietest AT tyre and I would nominate the Yokohama Geolandar AT/S. No, it doesn't have the huge load rating of others mentioned - but it is still rated higher than the wheels!
I had a couple of sets on my D3 and they were great. Went everywhere others with LT tyres did - without the noise and extra kg weight.

I've had a set of Geolandars on my L322, won't get them again as I do take the vehicle off-road. They're excellent on road, ok off-road but sadly not up to the rigours of Vic high country tracks. I've cut 2 and completely destroyed a third. Very soft sidewalls, which contributes to their comfort but not their longevity. I'm now down to 2 and have put a set of chinese Roadclaws on the front, they're not LT construction either but have a more aggressive pattern. No noticeable increase in road noise, definitely better off-road traction than the Geolandars. I'm on 265/60/18. They'll do for the meantime and seem ok so far.Quote:

Time for new tyres. Sick of replacing these D697's. Pretty much could be on a whole new set of others given how many of these I've had to replace over the last little while. I think this will be the fourth one needing to be replaced in the last 2 years / 20,000kms.
Now to decide between KO2's or STMaxx. The resonance issues others have with the BFG's are putting me off a bit. I know some others aren't fans of the Coopers, but i had a pretty good run out of the STMaxx on previous cars.
I ran Yokohama AT's for about 15 years untill I tried a set of Mickey Thompson ATZ P3's.
The P3's are a bit noisy compaird to the Yoko's But they are a far better tyre off and on the road in my experience.

The problem is the limited range of LT tyres in 265/60R18.
BFG, Mickey T and Cooper?
A number are available in XL construction, which is a big step up from passenger car tyres, e.g. Falken, Toyo and Nitto, but that still isn't LT.
My old girl spent most of her life operating from Alice Springs on HT tyres with the worst that happened being a set of Toyo's going eggy. The current GT Radials have survived the East and West McConnell's, the Entire Valley, Painted Desert, Flinders Ranges and some pretty average roads at warp speed between Menindee and Wilcannia without issue.
Just pot luck on the PO and my part.
Heavily leaning toward Falken's atm purely because of the construction.
I'd love to try the Pirelli ATR Plus, the local the blood really rates them so far but they are only available in a 110H load rating in 265/60-18.
Go up to the 265/65R18 and they jump up to a 114T load/speed rating but I think I'll have clearance/rubbing issues.
About 1/2" all round Rick, is it really that tight ? as a bonus you'll end up with a more accurate speedo :)Quote:
