Just to provide a different perspective to everyone else's glowing praise of the D697's, I've had a shocking run with mine.
Consider them a highway tyre and you will be happy - as soon as they see rocks they disintegrate. My sidewalls are shot, I've had numerous punctures but at least they are quiet on road. The sidewalls do seem to bag out a lot more than other tyres i've seen for any given air pressure - this may be adding to the problems. By less than 20,000kms i had replaced two of them and have serious cut on the sidewalls of the remaining.

I'm surprised no ones mentioned Michelin's LTX Force AT tyre.

A milder AT, I think they'd be worth a look.

I have the original version of these tyres. I love them.

I have them in a 265/50R20 on our D4 and in a 285/75R16 on my RRC.

Grippy, good on the wet season roads, good in sand and not overly harsh in overall ride quality. They look the goods too!

But the ones fitted to the D4 are up around 35,000kms now and I'm not sure if it's because we are back in the Adelaide suburbs or they are getting worn, but you can start to hear them. Mostly when the window is down and very faintly if you listen for them in without the radio on, but you can hear them. My partner seems to have ultrasonic hearing and even she said they were getting noisier.

By all means, they are not terrible and I am not regretting any decision, just outlining what I have heard previous about them getting noisier over time.

Not worried about this in the RRC as I am barely able to hear the radio at times, but also because I have only about a thousand Kay's on them.

I would second or third the recommendation of this tyre, not just because they are made well, good quality or just look good, but they are priced very well.

Also they have a different pattern on each side wall so you have a choice.

Same here. I went with these because of all the positive comments that I read at the time, but after a few sessions of off roading they all developed what looked to me like serious deep cuts to the tread area and on one the side wall was badly gashed which made it a write off. I guess it's what you put them through and a bit of luck too, but I will look elsewhere next time.

These are on my list of possibilities if I can't find a suitable 20" for my use so convert to 18".

Yes, that's what I have on mine and what I meant when I said I have Michelins in my earlier post. I couldn't remember the name off the top of my head and it was too cold to go outside. Very happy with them albeit haven't had the chance to try off road.

I have 2 D697s with deep cuts in the sidewall from some fairly nasty rocks. No ill behaviour of either of them though, and all four are wearing pretty evenly. I would get them again for touring but for playing something with a tougher sidewall would be better

Some of those 697 sizes have no where near the load rating of something like a BFG A/T in the same size.

Although noisier, the BFG is a very strong tyre.

After 20yrs of running them,i have only had one slow puncture,a large teck screw through the tyre, which was worn out anyway.

In fact, for remote area travel, desert trips,Cape trips, etc,i have stopped taking two spares, unless the tyres are pretty worn,in that case i just take a carcase instead of a full second spare wheel. And a plug kit.

I looked up BFG ATs in my Defender's size of LT235/85/16 AT and the load rating is 120. My Hankook Dynapro ATs in the same size are rated at 116.

I feel happy to be part of the pack. Safety in numbers ha ha.

My BFG KO2 (43K km's and about 2.5 yrs old now) are now hideously noisy between 45-65 km per hr. They weren't at all when new.
I've also had D697 and experienced similar noise problems after about similar wear use, but less age. I couldn't believe it was tyre related at first so had the mechanic looking for all sorts of possible hardware issues ha ha.

Personally (had Cooper, Bridgestone and BFG) I feel very confident with the BFG. For me its all about the weight capacity of the tyre. Then the sidewall bag out. The Coopers were the worst for that. The Birdsville Track really chopped up the D697.
BFGs are looking fine, but with possible uneven wear (I live near many roundabouts, so rotate very regularly) and age has really brought on the resonance in the cabin.

Could be new shoe time, at less than 50km (which is a bit annoying) but then, so is the noise. !!!
