P0915 Gear Shift Position Circuit Range/Performance

    Hi,

This is my first time posting so forgive me if this is dealt with elsewhere I couldn't find it. I did find some things that I have already tried none of which have reset these faults.

I bought a Discovery 3 a few months back. I changed my brake pads recently and the next day it came up with a bunch of faults on the dash display.

    - HDC Fault, Special Programs Not available,
    - My ride height doesn't work
    - Only runs in low range

I tried a hard reset, I replaced the battery, I replace the front and rear brake sensors.

I got myself a Hawkeye Total and there were a plethora of faults, most could be reset simple enough and stayed away. The persistent ones are

    - P0915 Gear Shift Position Circuit Range/Performance (I'm thinking this one is at the heart of my problems)
    - U0416 Invalid data received from vehicle dynamics (this fault is on multiple control units)
    - U0403 Invalid data received from transfer case
    - U0421 Invalid data received from Ride level control

These faults are cross multiple units but it seems like the transmission is at the centre of it all along with the gear shift fault.

Do I start by troubleshooting the Gear shift position or the communications between the control modules?

I can give more info on which modules have which fault codes if it helps.

Have you changed the brake switch ? Switch from a Territory is the same.

Here is what I did to mine when looking for oil leak

I was looking for an oil leak, cleaned up the oil an took it for a run. Reversed in , switched off , looked underneath, still had oil, getting late so when in side.
The next day I had these, could not get rid of them, searched for answers. Scratched head, could not understand, wife said I should not be touching it.
(you have a few of these.)

Left it for a few hours and thought about what I did the previous night.
I think this is what happened. I came home, reversed in and as I am on a bit of a hill, decided to put in low range to back closer to the shed, but abandoned
the idea half way thru and turned off the motor, leaving it with and incomplete high/low range change over.

So the fix was to start it, put it in neutral and re-select high/low range. I was going to try and prove it and write it up here but never did.
The thing I forgot under the pressure was the need to put it in Neutral to change Range, so had a few anxious hours.

    Could this be your issue?
    Also consider P0915-00 (2F) Gearshift position - circuit range/performance
could be talking about transfer case rather than transmission.

    Regards
    Gerry

Could be as simple as the gear selector cable requiring adjustment. The in cabin selector may read "P", but at the box it may be half way between. There is an adjuster next to the transmission case under the car that may need tweaking to ensure the car is in the correct indicated gear position...

    Hope this makes sense....

I favour this possibility due to being stuck in low range.
The transfer case motor may require recalibration, a feature available on the IIDTool but I don't know if available on your tool.

This worked perfectly, I had no idea this would be such a simple fix. Bit embarrassing really.

    Thanks for the quick response.

Thanks for actually coming back with a follow up. So many people don't even bother, and your "I did this and it worked" will be hugely valuable in the future when someone else stumbles over the same (or a similar) fault.
