I did the brake pads (front and rear) and a wheel rotation on my wife's 2009 Turbo Forester last Friday. A young apprentice from the Parramatta Subaru dealer happened along and decided to give me hand. When we were putting the wheels back on, I grabbed my torque wrench to do up the wheel nuts**. I asked him if they just use a rattle gun and he said that they always use a torque wrench.
I must admit I was surprised.
When I removed the wheels, I couldn't undo the wheel nuts even with with a long breaker bar. I had to use a rattle gun (the Suby hadn't had it's last in-warranty service from them but by another Suby dealer who'd lost the service records book). If I'd had to change a tyre on the road, it would have been impossible.
** The setting (100Nm) is not in the owner's manual. I found it by downloading the workshop manual from the 'net.
I have been using Tyreright in Boulder since I had my D2 and have never had any issues with wheel nuts on either the D2 or the D4. They only ever use a rattle gun to spin on or off the nuts, and use a breaker bar and socket to loosen / tighten the nuts on ANY customer vehicle - I have witnessed this myself on many occasions.
Can't speak highly enough of the service I have received from this business, and as a result of this service, it has never interested me to look elsewhere.
I went with Pirelli Scorpion AT+ in 265/60 R18.
So far, there's no difference in road noise from the 19" ATR's (255/55) they replaced.
I was concerned that may be an issue, but they're just as quiet.
I've managed a bit of driving on dirt/gravel, but nothing major yet. Very impressive there, too.
Next week will be the big test when we head out to Bungalbin (Helena & Aurora Ranges), and come back off-road via Mt Jackson.
I live in Wembley and work in West Perth if you want to drop by and have a look at the AT+'s. Drop me a PM.
