It got its rear differential oil changed. I found it interesting: the service history shows that it was last done at 128k. There was a little noise noted during the last service. The process was easy enough. This shot shows the oil draining.

Here's the residue from the drain plug magnet. Nice smooth paste - no shards or contamination...

That said, I was really surprised by the colour - it smelt good, but was definitely not the honey gold of the stuff I replaced it with.... Thats after 71k. Of note, there was also too much - I reckon about 1350ml, as opposed to the specified 1250.
The colour makes me reckon that MR Automotive's recommendation of 36k changes is worth noting.

Your unscientific view of the “look” of the oil means SFA. The “look” or the “vibe” of the oil means nothing.
Try sampling it because casting ridiculous assumptions based on irrelevant views of oil colour

Next time you wish to be condescendingly rude, try to write English... I presume you mean 'before' casting ridiculous assumptions, (as opposed to because) which, even if you got that right, would still be grammatically/colloquially incorrect, as it's 'casting aspersions', not assumptions. (no one 'casts assumptions' - they make them...)
Once you can say what you mean in clear and plain English, come back to me. Until then,I'd be grateful if you keep quiet and allow a novice to contribute to the forum with interest and enthusiasm. The benefit of this forum is partly about mutual learning. I'm willing to admit I know nothing about oil - but I don't need someone in here attacking me for it.

Conversely, I'm delighted if they explain what I don't yet know, politely... You just failed that test, spectacularly.

Thanks, I've been meaning to do my diffs for ages but the oil (Penrite) hasn't been in stock anywhere, I just checked and my local has it back on the shelf, so I bought a couple extra bottles. I agree with the short change period due to the tiny amount of oil in the them, mine always comes out dark which I put down to heat, thankfully I've never had any major Metal... Well yet!

The front diff is a lot harder on the oil than the rear. Interestingly I've found better wear rates in the front diff with a 85W140 mineral oil over a 75w90 synthetic , but the rear is the other way around with the same oils

Yup - I had a bit of a hunt for it. In the end I actually had it delivered postally from SCA...
