Breakdown two weeks after last service and warranty end - should LR be gracious?

    Hi all,

Been a while since I've posted, been motoring along happily with a 2014 D4 3.0SDV6. Unfortunately after restarting the vehicle at the weekend there was a not very good noise within first 1-2mins of idling. To me it sounded like a belt or something mechanical, no warning lights on the dash.

End result was a tow organised by LR Assist after NRMA guy said "yeah maybe loose belt, pulley and water pump but not seen this before".

Vehicle is now at the main dealer I've been since purchase for service. My question is - should they look after me better than replacement of these items at my cost???

I had the vehicle in for it's 60 month service 2 weeks ago ( same day the LR Assured Extended Warrarty expired ). I had timed that service so if any issues were flagged or updates needed it would be covered. Now I will have to pay $1399 for this repair and vehicle is off the road till Friday as LR have only one water pump available in the country ( which is being transferred from another dealer ) plus other parts from Melbourne.

Has anyone had a water pump fail like this at 43,000km or less? Is that normal and would a scheduled service pick this up? The service agent told me that it's not something could be picked up and I was unlucky.

Asides from replacing tyres all round ( once ), rear pads twice, front once and wiper blades and a new battery I've not had to use the factory or extended warranty so have no experience of how this type of issue is handled.

    Appreciate any advice or suggestions.

You should receive “good will” on this repair.
Assumption being full service history etc.

Non specialist mechanic picked up on a grumbling water pump and replaced it b 4 it failed. ....so I would expect LR should have detected it!

Yeah full history same dealer for this vehicle, insisted that LR Assist take me there even though I was technically closer to another in the metro area. They always seem keen to score a 9 or a 10 when surveyed so fingers crossed. I’ve had someone from Jaguar Land Rover contact me as well following up on the tow and repair.

Not the same vehicle and not the same distance, but I did have a water pump fail dramatically at about 120,000km on my 300tdi.

It wasn't leaking or making any noises, but the bearing suddenly collapsed almost immediately after starting one morning the day after returning from a trip to Qld.

Since I had had barely started off, I heard a noise and pulled up before it was even up to operating temperature, so no overheating problems even though coolant was pouring out.

Maybe it is possible for a failure to give no advance warning. I had no warning signs.

Yep and if good will doesn't do it, start mentioning Australian Consumer Law and your preference not to get lawyers involved, but as a matter of principle you will if needed.

There should be no planet on which a water pump with those kilometres and young age, assuming coolant was changed when stipulated, is not replaced at no cost to you.

    Cheers

Water pumps on the v6 diesel seem extremely long lasting, one might say they out last the engine

    I'd say:
    *unlucky it failed.
*useless and typical dealer network that a genuine pump takes so long to get in, but surprised they actually have one in Australia.
*I have a genuine one in stock.

I would check that LR "inspected" the vehicle including the cooling system. Their work carries a 12 month warranty, so even if out of factory or extended warranty, the last job is always covered, including inspection work.

What i dont fully understand is the OP states the water pump failing at 43000km and being out of factory AND LR extended warranty. Being a 2014

As a comparison, my 2011SDV6SE was bought by me second hand in 2013 with the balance (1yr) of new car warranty (3yrs) plus i added platinum 4yrs LR extended wty. I came out of warranty in Dec 2017, 6 years after 1st registration. In that time i had approx 12,000 aud worth of waranty work done the extended wty was 3500 over 4 years so paid for itself 3 times over.

I was only offered a 2 year LR extended warranty by the dealer in 2014 when I bought new, so the warranty end would have been at 5 years if I had taken it.
This is probably what the OP had too. Glad I didn't bother given that no warranty work was required in the 4th or 5th year.
I agree that water pump failure at that age/km's is unlucky/rare.
