Which I never look at and completely ignore as having been involved in early deefers for many years and my venerable D2 that had a few heavy tows in its time - hence I have always insisted on proper gauges for peace of mind, as have many of our brothers and sisters.Quote:

The good thing is it works on the whole system. Not just the radiator.
Just make sure you flush it out really good two or three times afterwards.

So having returned home from a stint away for a spot of casual work in downtown Sydney, I have, today picked up my D4 from my good LR service agents in Geraldton. I also got to spend a bit of time chatting with the service tech. He filled me in on what he had found when working on my D4.......hark back to my last post re temp fluctuations and a vibration!
The advice was the 'hot side' radiator hoses were still serviceable albeit with some signs of age and a minor weep at one of the hose unions. Not bad for 8 years in service and 279500+ kms. These hoses along with the thermostat have been replaced.
Whilst it is 40+ outside today and obviously a 'great' time to test for the temperature fluctuations I am not going out to hook up my caravan and take it for a run......in fact I can tell you all, that it is absolutely the last thing I am about to go and do! I might melt out there[tonguewink].
The rear prop shaft was replaced...........over time these things deteriorate slowly so that you don't really notice the issues they bring about until they get really bad. The centre bearing mount was not well nor was the uni joint at the rear of the shaft. I also had had a little bit of drive-line snatch now and again which I had put down to my driving. Along with the vibration I mentioned previously it seems as though the thing was not traveling well at all.
What can I say........the difference that new prop shaft has made is awesome. There is no drive-line snatch nor any sign of vibration. In fact it the D4 is as far as I can tell running smoother than I ever remember, feels like a new vehicle!

Sweet. Interesting about the driveline. I’d assumed my clunks etc were the box but maybe the prop shaft ....
I don't know about the rest of you but I tend to think the worst when it comes to my vehicles.........when a problem arises it's always going to be some very very costly techno wizard issue that no one else in the world has ever experienced.......the truth is usually much more mundane and much less expensive......In this case I was worried about gear box issues and thinking about all sorts of very costly problems when in reality my issues were much less dramatic. Add to this the fact that I have never before owned, much less had to maintain, a vehicle that has done the sort of km's my D4 now has on the 'clock'.
Next service is at 300,000k's.
I called my LR service agent and took my vehicle up to Geraldton for their review. The business owner came for a 'test' drive with me and on our return put the vehicle up on the hoist and went straight to the drive shaft for a 'look' and was able to get movement that he said was not normal. This movement was both shown and demonstrated to me. They believed that to be the cause of my vibration problem and after the 'demo' I certainly concurred with their view. Hence the replacement of the prop shaft.
I cannot stress enough how important a level head and good technical advice is at these times. Otherwise a very depleted bank account will be the outcome! I guess I am, to some extent, in uncharted territory when it comes to what to expect into the future. I these cases I fall back on my own past experiences which tell me that things like a radiator replacement or a auto trans overhaul amongst others will be out there in the future.
All in all I have been careful to maintain the D4 as per the LR 'Heavy Duty' schedule with a service each 13,000km and listened carefully to my service agents advice. That is not to say I have done everything the service agent recommends, rather together we discuss the issues that arise from time to time and agree a course of action or to keep a watching brief. Also I like to think I keep informed via the use of the AULRO website and also the Disco3 UK website. That way I can also offer up my opinion and 'operator' experience. It all adds to the flavor.
I consider myself lucky that I have a very competent and flexible authorised LR service agent that is strong on customer focus and excellent on delivery of good outcomes. Equally the advantage of being able to review the items on this website, amongst others, has proved its worth on many an occasion.
