    2010 D4 3.0L freshen up thread

    270,000km.
    As some may have read, my vehicle had been leaking oil from a couple of places. To properly resolve it was agreed a body off would be best, plus new timing belts etc while changing seals.

    Upon inspection it was found the crankshaft had excessive end float/play. Factory spec is somewhere in the 0.2-0.4mm range. Mine measured at 0.7mm. It was deemed that we should take out the crank from the bottom and refresh the main bearings and big end bearings. The top end would be left alone along with the bore/rings. At the same time all new cam and crank seals would be fitted, sump gaskets, rocker cover gaskets etc.

    The plan is to hopefully get another couple of hundred km out of it, probably become a second car once second hand Defenders become affordable. That’s said, not sure why I’d then need two capable off-roaders

    Sounds like a mid-life rebuild. Should see you good now to 500,000kms.

    Wow, seriously impressive commitment to your vehicle, at 270,000km how did the numbers stack up for repair Vs replacement and what were the other considerations that tipped you toward the repair route. There is a point where heart over rules logic, and I can certainly relate to that but there's also a point that the repair $s go quadratic and that can be a bit of a strain on the heart as well.
    Just wondering.........?

    That’s really interesting about excess crank play. You probably dodged a bullet ie viable/unviable rebuild. Good call to get it looked at.

    Well the vehicle was essentially unsaleable. I could have traded it, but the changeover in its current state would have been as much as I’m spending. It was leaking oil from a number of different places. I was also in the unfortunate position that when it was body off that the full extend was uncovered. At that point I was in for a penny as they say, so in for the pound wasn’t as bad. It’s the HSE so has a bit of value still left in it.

    If the Defender was available then maybe I’d have traded it for one, but I wouldn’t swap from one D4 to another - might as well keep what I have - again changeover, stamp duty etc, and all the inevitable issues that arise I’ve already fixed.

    The other thing was - I looked at the cost of a loan for a new car - if this gets me a few more years until I can get a second hand Defender, then I’m still much better off.

    Dunno. Just wasn’t ready to change yet, but wasn’t sure how much longer I’d get out of it if I didn’t give it some love.

    Sounds like a good plan. New Defender deliveries are probably about 6 mths away. In 2 years we will all have a better idea of how appealing the new Defender is.

    I think the same, I know my car, I know everything is done and done right, if I get another car you can't check everything, end up spending more on it. I'm at 220k ish now. Gotta change the belt and tensioner when it turns up. Might be a bar on the crank and see what's happening

    Like you, fairly soon I have a bunch of things all due at the same time on my D3, plus I'm changing things that I don't know the life of just in case. It's going to cost a fair bit, but I only paid $6k for it as it had done ~510,000km when I bought it a couple of years ago, so I feel it is well worth it. It's in really good condition, so after it's mid-life servicing, it should be good for at least another couple of hundred thousand kms before outlaying too much more money on it (cross fingers and don't tempt the Land Rover Gods!)....
    Life is just a series of obstacles preventing you from taking a nap.

    Wow, what year. I thought my L322 was up there with almost 300,000km.
