ZF 8 speed Steel pan options

    Hi all

Has anyone with an 8 speed gearbox replaced the plastic gear box pan with a steel pan?

I know the 6 speed steel pan is available, but am curious to hear if anyone has replaced on the 8 speed box and what did you use?

    Cheers

Although a steel pan for the 8 speed has been mooted since shortly after the First Fleet landed, it is yet to eventuate.

The only reason for the steel pan mod on the 6 speed was due to the design of the plastic pan requiring you to cut part of it to remove. Meaning to refit a plastic pan would mean it would need to be cut, rendering it useless.

The 8-speed plastic pan can be removed and refitted without any cutting, so a steel pan is not required, hence the lack of a steel pan being available.

Another reason for the 6 speed pan replacement was the exposure of the plastic pan when off roading, although i doubt the steel pan would be able to take much more, but woyld probably bend /dent rather than shattering like the plastic pan would. I guess a little piece of mind.

That reminds me, i need to ask Santa for some APT rocksliders and an alloy transmission bash plate...

So are any Melbournians going to A&B Auto to get theirs done? Approx cost? Or since there is no steel pan required, are you just getting the dealer/Indy to do it.

Definitely get A&B in Dandenong to do the full service. They also check fault codes and software version but will not do a reset if not necessary.

Around 800 seems to be the verbally quoted amount...but be prepared for more when it comes to paying as access "issues" can arise that delay the job. I'd say 800 to 1100 would be a fairly accurate expected cost range.

I had mine done a couple of months ago and it was below $800. They were concerned that the price of the transmission fluid had doubled, but my cost was still under $800 (I recall $770).

My recollection was that I paid for a new plastic tray, which includes the transmission fluid filter. That cost around $220 I think. They checked the tranny and found no issues ... I did feel a touch smoother, I thought ... my mileage was 70k. About 15k towing.

I queried my LR dealer in Melbourne and they said $3,400 for the transmission fluid change. The vehicle was still under an extended warranty at the time. Now out of warranty. Late 2014 vehicle.

    Thanks for the input.

My understanding was that the plastic pan and filter were 1 piece, so if you wanted to drain and replace the filter it was basically a new pan also (whereas the 6 speed steel pan allowed drain and filter replacement only). Is this correct?

I’m on 60k kms now and my Indy has a potential source in the coming months, hopefully before I get much above 75k.
