Good thought. However, my 18" Tuff Ant steelies with BFG's are blimmin heavy to get up onto the roof. Must weight about 200kg or thereabouts (*slight exaggeration!). I reckon I'd do my back in. How do you go with that?

Also, the Rijidij unit does not interfere with the sight lines of the rear lamps, so there's no faffing about with wiring.
Thanks for the tip. Will suss it out and see what it looks like.

Our Defender has a Mantec spare wheel carrier which opens with the door, so no inconvenience. Does the Ridij one for tge D4 do that?

I do like white vehicles with dark trim. Yours looks great.

Impossible. The D3/4 has an upper and lower tailgate. The carrier has to be opened before either tailgate can be accessed.

Agreed it's a bit heavy and I have the alloys but I lift the tyre onto the tailgate then stand on it and lift it up onto the roof. Not too difficult.

Hah! That's what I do, too. But either wheels get heavier as they age or gravity is getting stronger!

    Hi guys,
I haven't updated this thread for quite a while.
I installed a K9 ladder a couple of weekends ago. Good piece of kit and easy install.
It makes it so much easier getting onto the roof now. A couple of photos:

For anybody following this thread and feels that putting the spare on the roof is a bit beyond them for various reason (mine was 'cos I'm getting fat old and ugly), I recently made up a winch to lift it onto the Rijidij RWC and which could also be switched over to the van to lift it's spare wheel as well.
Details are in the tech section.
