Aerpro CALR05 for fitting double DIN aftermarket headunits into low spec D4 vehicles

Unfortunately I'm a victim of this. I must say that the advertising on both Aerpro and Connects2 web pages are inaccurate at best. I first purchased the facia kit including the wiring for the touch screen OEM systems (it's simply just advertised as works for 2009-2016 Discovery). Of course nothing fit, so I decided to get the CALR05 since i seemingly had a Basic display.

I have the blue basic display, Harman Kardon system/AMP but without MOST.

I managed to fit the CALR05 to my 2011 D4 SE by adapting the plug connecting to the CD player unit. I get reversing signal, I get full decoding/display of the parking sensors but unfortunately no steering wheel input. I'm not able to get anywhere with Connects2 support, here is their last reply:
With our interface for the Land rover discovery 4 we have 2 kits, one for the vehicles with the OEM Navigation and amplified system and the kit for the more basic system that the Infodaptor was designed BUT although this was classed a basic system this would be a Blue display and the connector on the vehicle harness would be the same as our Infodaptor. There is an even more basic system where the vehicle has a Red display and the connector on the vehicle is a Grey connector where this type of radio system would not, if this is the type of system you have our Infodaptor may not be fully compatible with your vehicle.

So according the OP, is it correct that there is a way around it, or does Tony in this case have the Red basic display?

I too have the basic blue screen on a 2010 SE. I contacted Aeropro direct and they were confident it would fit, I have gone to their recommended installer and they to are confident it will fit.
Instal day is Tuesday so I'll let you know of the progress - not wanting to be pessimistic but I don't think it will work, but I hope Im wrong.
I'll come back to the thread following Tuesday with more information and follow up.

So no luck. Apparently I have an odd ball - 'Harmon Kardon premier system with no optical'.

The installers are chasing up other options, possibly having to replace the amplifier and this will allow connection to the steering controls.
They have also contacted Aeropro who have pushed it 'upstairs', I assume to developers and techs.

I'll keep the forum informed of progress or otherwise.

That would be the same as I have - I don't think it's an odd ball, it seems to be what was delivered with the 10/11 SE models.
The blue screen and media unit are produced by FoMoCo - ie. Ford parts

Connects2 - that produce the Aerpro infodapters - has offered to send me an experimental unit for testing. It will support steering wheel input but not necessarily the settings menu. Oh well I guess I can just reconnect the blue screen to set the time/date after disconnecting the battery. I've asked them to confirm if I will still get the reversing signal which I need to activate the rear camera on my HU.

Will keep you posted.

There are four different audio systems in the 2010-2011MY D4 (VINs Axxxxxx & BAxxxxxx)

Base
Small screen, non-touch
No Harman Kardon branding
No subwoofer, no external amp, no fibre optics
(not sold in Australia as far as I know)

MidLine
Small screen, non-touch
Harman Kardon branding
Subwoofer and external amplifier, no fibre optics

HI-ICE
Touchscreen
Harman Kardon branding
Subwoofer, external amplifier, fibre optic system

Premium / Logic7
Touchscreen
Harman Kardon Logic7 branding
Subwoofer, external amplifier, fibre optic system

Those are all different to the 2012MY-onward systems from VIN CAxxxxxx onward, of which there are three versions

Base
Small screen, non-touch
No Harman Kardon branding
No subwoofer, no external amp, no fibre optics

HI-ICE
Touchscreen
Harman Kardon or Meridian branding
Subwoofer, external amplifier, fibre optic system

Premium / Logic7 / Meridian Surround

I have never seen a Base system in a 2010-2011 model in Australia, seems all the local cars were built with the MidLine as the lowest spec in 2010-2011.

The Base system in the 2012-onward is totally different to the Base or MidLine in the 2010-2011.

The HI-ICE or Premium systems in the 2010-2011 and the 2012-onward are again totally different hardware.

You can actually make the MidLine amplifier in a 2010-2011 model work from an aftermarket head unit. The inputs to the amp are speaker-level, you just take the four speaker channels from an aftermarket head unit and feed them in to the amp inputs, and connect up the remote wire (to wake up the amp).

Thanks for clarifying the various hifi options in Australia. It makes sense. Given Connects2 is a UK company they might have different spec models as we do over here which might have confused them as well (they have the "Commercial" etc.)

Yes, that's the easy part. All you have to do is a bit of detective work with the speaker wires because they are all green. On the same plug you'll also find the ground and main power that you can use on the HU.

A little bit trickier is:

1. Ignition positive. You should be able to find one in one of the OE HU plugs
2. Reverse signal. This must be decoded from CAN, unless you want to wire from the reverse lights
3. Steering wheel input. Requires CAN decoding.
4. Speed signal/brake signal. Not important but if you want it it requires CAN decoding. Brake signal can be wired from brake switch.
5. Reversing camera. I don't have a OEM camera so I just wired in a new aftermarket one and I think that's the easiest way

Reporting back that I have had success – with the help of Sam at Gold Coast Car Audio in Southport. All the steering column buttons work [bigrolf].

Interesting journey but some information that may assist as I’m sure you’re aware, it’s complicated.

Adaptor kit supplied by Aeropro/Connects2, the catalogue connector didn’t work initially, and another came out from the UK. But having said that, Sam had to still rejig the interface and change some of the connections as they were wrong.

Head Unit – initially I was going with an Alpine wireless unit but the interesting thing was that with this particular unit, only 2 buttons would work on the steering controls. Sam did some calls and research and a Pioneer DMH-Z5350BT would do the job. There are different resistance measures associated with the Pioneer unit that allowed full steering wheel controls, the Alpine couldn’t do this (I swear Anatomy and Physiology is easier than this!!).
I do have the wireless version of this unit on backorder (none in the country until June).

The only thing I’m unsure of is setting the clock which used to be done through the media unit, everything else seems to function as it should. Not sure if this indicates other problems and happy to be informed please.

Again, without expert input this wouldn’t have happened so kudos to Gold Coast Car Audio. Extremely happy with the outcome.
