I recently had the RHS intake manifold replaced by a respected independent for about $1700. He suggested that the LHS was ok so wait for it to go before replacing. Glue and gaffer tape should effect a quick temporary fix if caught short in cripple mode.

My son's D4 has only had the right one done and that was a couple of years ago, with the left one still intact.

Yes, I only do one at a time, too.

There is negligeable extra labour to get in there to replace the other one later, in fact it isn't worth mentioning when faced with a 4k job or a 2k one....

Do you mean RHS as in Driver's side?
Interesting indeed, do the owner's who've had the failure consider the RHS to be the most common to fail?

+1 rhs or driver's side failed, I changed both but due to the amount of driving I do with the trailer on

    As he said.

I only do the one, RHS, the passenger side may or may not ever fail. As Justin said, $2K or $4K.

Recently had someone come in to get a RHS one replaced, didnt like my price and decided to do it himself (which I actually dont have a problem with). About 3 weeks later it turned up on a tilt truck. $1K later and I had fixed the leaking injectors, leaking spill line (replaced), fixed broken breather lines, fixed broken plug on fuel pressure sensor, fixed a intake leak, cleaned all the excessive diesel spill off everywhere. (I did have a problem with this as I hate hodge bodge workmanship). So after he purchased the manifold and spent 3 weekends doing the job plus my $1K he really didnt save anything.

The same deal with timing belts, I am (or any repairer) taking that chance if something does go pear shaped I may well be up for replacing an engine at my cost. I can also see this one customer as an example that even my bad days are some what better than others best efforts. Make no mistake though, I've seen dealers do way way worse.

BUT (there is always a but) what I do I dont consider to be rocket science and am always quite happy to help out in advise with regards to owners tackling these fun jobs themselves.
    Regards

This wasn’t me (let it be known!), but I stuffed my passenger one up by forgetting to silicone the rear cam cap rocker seal. Everything else went to plan but I then had an endless oil leak (one of a few). I however didn’t stuff my injectors, return line or intake. As a guide my driver side went at 160k km and the the passenger at 240k km.

Yes let it be known it wasnt you or I dont think any member here.
Although I have been called arrogant (or likely worse) I'd say most members here / and or customers that know me, would have approached me and ask for some tips and tricks when doing this sort of job themselves.

Smack bang in the middle of that at 200,000km (coming up in 2500km). Still on original manifolds. Touch wood. I subscribe to the "if it aint broke" philosophy in this case. I wonder if anyone has made a set of 3D metal printed ones.
