I have now added the APT Sump Guard. The curious thing is that it has a hole for the sump plug access (matching that of the original LR plate) but neither of them actually align to provide access to the sump in any case. At least that is my view of it.

The hole is purely to allow visual inspection
Thanks for the clarification... I will have to follow up on the vacuum extraction process. As for the inspection hole...not sure what you would be looking for...oil leaks?

Inspection of what? To me its a drain hole for water, mud etc. Theres nothing to "inspect" at that point and the hole is too small to see anything anyway. The steel belly pan fitted with my ARB 'bar and the factory plastic "guard" for the transmission also has similar drain holes.
APT is good gear, still have the rocksliders on my wishlist....

I was advised not to bother with the sump guard because the factory metal plate under the engine is already tough enough...?
Perhaps, but imho the tranmission bash plate is a plastic one that is not suitable for anything but light gravel rash protection on unsealed roads.
I agree Eric, I couldn’t see the purpose of the hole or what you would be looking for...it is most likely a remnant of the past. As to the toughness of the factory sump plate...it did look to be reasonable, but it is all relative to what it may bash up against. One area not to neglect is the Air Compressor and the APT kit is worth looking at. Ben has put together some informative install videos for all the kit APT Offroad
