Thread: Disco 4 auto service

We had a Datsun 1600 many moons ago and a great little car it was. Very simple to maintain as were all vehicles back then.... none of yer new fangled computer thingamebobs to go wrong with them.

My local auto trans shop did my last service. I just filled the boot with the parts so he didn't have to waste his time looking for right filter and oil. Was in and out quickly. I did the one before on the shed floor. The only drama I had was pumping the oil in with the Tom thumb pump. Worked well. Just took allot of pumps

Hi Guys, Please find attached a couple of pics of the 1600. It was restored quite a few years ago but still looks basically the same today. Runs worked L18. Not allowed to sell it as the (adult) kids have dibs on it !

Many on here do it themselves. Myself included (at 89,000 kms so I'd say perfect time for you to do it as PM ) Not technically hard, anyone with basic mechanical knowledge could do it, so your idie would have no problems, or a transmission specialist. As Dd says, just make sure the correct fluid is used. The ZF is guaranteed to be right and the Penrite seems a viable option from comments on here and other users with the ZF in different cars.

NB: The waiting for the fluid to cool the do level check as per the procedure took ages, like 6 hours or something. In future it will be an afternoon job and leave overnight to cool before final level check.

No need to wait until the fluid cools, when refilling you need to have your diagnostic tool plugged in to tell you transmisdion temperaturr. Correct level is achieved at idle when temp reaches 35deg C and fluid starts to come out of the fill point. Takes maybe 20min max total from completely empty to fill and level check . Best to have someone help you, one to fill and obe to watch the temp and cycle through the gears.

Unless of course if you changed the oil when it was already at full temp (or it is a hot day). Limiting the warm up to around 50 degrees should bring the oil temp back around 30 degrees after the oil change (on a cool day) but ZF do state the oil should be at full operating temperature first before draining. I ended up also rechecking the oil level the following day.

Not sure if you're thinking about the 6speed?

IIRC (without going to the procedure) you need to heat up the transmission to 70 something open the thermostat which ensures all parts of the transmission has filled with fluid. Then you need to let it cool to 35 to do the final level check. NB: Had gap tool connected for temp readings.

Three weeks ago I had my D4 serviced including ALL fluids, engine oil, gearbox, transfer case and both diffs. I do this approximately every 75,000km as I tow a van a bit. I have this done at a local LR independent here in Bathurst. They were very accommodating to me as I asked if there was any problem in me observing all the work done. It was not to check up on them at all but purely so I could learn where everything was and be able to do more myself if needed.

Oil filter was replaced and fuel filter as well, They checked air filter and pollen filter but they had been replaced only 6 months earlier and I have done very little travel with COVID so they were fine.Also adjusted parking brakes.

Overall cost for everything (inc labour) was $2,190.

Cost of Gearbox ZF8Pan and Filter - $566
Cost of gearbox oil 8 litres Lifeguard 8 - $400
Labour cost for Gearbox (probably took about 2/5 of total labour time of service) - about $270

I noted that they followed all the correct steps in filling gearbox. Getting up to temp, going through gears, re-checking levels, etc.

So about $1,250 for just the gearbox service I guess. While the sump guards were off it made it possible to do transfer case oil, front diff and fuel filter. They also drained engine oil from sump plug as well rather than sucking it out seeing it was up on hoist.

Thought this info might be of benefit to you.
