    Disco 4 auto service

Hi Guys, I have a 2015 TDV6 (90k) and after reading many threads on this forum am going to have a service done on the auto. I got a quote from the Local LR dealer of $2300.00 and nearly fell off my chair! The service manager also commented that it is filled for life and that changing it may open a can of worms? maybe they don't need the work.
Can anyone recommend an alternative service centre to have it done, I am based near Coffs Harbour NSW.
I have normal services done by an independent who I find very good.
Love the forum and the Disco
    Regards, kenf

A&B Automatics in Dandenong, Victoria are authorised repairers of ZF transmissions. I know that at least two Melbourne Landrover dealers send cars there for transmission servicing and repair.
A&B has advised that the 8 speed box should be good for up to 130,000km before it needs a service. If used a lot around town or if used for towing heavy loads or if used off-road (think Vic Alps) then they recommend servicing it earlier than that.
I had mine serviced at 90,000km. I mostly do country miles, a bit of towing and a bit of serious mountain work. Their standard service costs $704 and includes a complete fluid change plus software check.
It wouldn't enter my head to take it anywhere else and I expect to have it serviced there again at 180,000kms.
Now, A&B are too far away for you, but I would suggest you call them and ask if they know of an authorised ZF repair shop near you. And that's where I would take my car.
FYI, A&B reported that my fluid was fine, would have lasted a lot longer and the software was up to date. I'm a preventative maintenance freak, so I was delighted to hear that!

Am in Tassy so sorry can't recommend anyone in your neck of the woods.
Just a comment to say that 90k is an excellent time to get it done.

The LR service manager is, to quote an old mentor of mine, "dwelling in the realms of inexactitude".
In other words, to be kind to him, he doesn't know what he is talking about.

Any good Indie could do it for you, no big deal.
There is suitable info on the Web for your Indie to read.

The main thing is to ensure the person fills with correct oil.
ZF oil is great but stupidly expensive.
Over the years people have used incorrect oil mainly due to the respective oil companies claiming their oil is a suitable substitute but in most cases it wasn't, and has caused shudder and other probs.

Several fellas (me included) on this Forum have used Penrite BMV with success and that oil is a suitable substitute and available very cheaply at REPCO stores.

With the 8 speed box I would think a coupla hours or thereabouts should pull it up plus oil and consumables.

    Now: MY13 D4 TDV6. "E" rear diff. Cambo's magic Engine & Auto Tune.

    x2 for above.

Many on here do it themselves. Myself included (at 89,000 kms so I'd say perfect time for you to do it as PM ) Not technically hard, anyone with basic mechanical knowledge could do it, so your idie would have no problems, or a transmission specialist. As Dd says, just make sure the correct fluid is used. The ZF is guaranteed to be right and the Penrite seems a viable option from comments on here and other users with the ZF in different cars.

NB: The waiting for the fluid to cool the do level check as per the procedure took ages, like 6 hours or something. In future it will be an afternoon job and leave overnight to cool before final level check.

Daughter’s Tiguan 6 speed Aisin auto also sealed for life. Doesn’t even have a filler hole. You gotta learn a whole new trick pushing oil back in the drain hole.

This is who I have followed to change mine twice now:

DISCO3.CO.UK - View topic - Robbie's Guide To ZF8 Auto Transmission Oil Change

Maybe the dealer needs some educating...
    It's not difficult.

Changed the Transmission oils, colour compare pics.

Well on that comment alone I would be going elsewhere - the box is not sealed for life and the Land Rover service schedule has the service interval outlined (too long but it is there). The service manager of a dealership should know this.

    Go somewhere else.

There is a fitting to refill them through the drain, it is a common Aisin transmission service part.

Thanks guys for all the info, feel more confident now and will let you know how l go.
P.S. I'm old school and have a datsun 1600 that I completely restored some years ago without any problems but must admit when l open the bonnet of the Disco it's just the basic level checks and a visual look around, and, yes, I do read the owners manual.
It would be good if there was a advanced basic course available on Disco 4's for old fellas like me but then I've got the forum haven't I.
    Cheers kenf
