Worth checking the pads and actuation nevertheless.
It used to be a replace entirely new for old situation but note that now Britpart sell a kit for the plastic gear wheels in the module that can get damaged. The rest seems pretty bulletproof.

In this vid he mentions the dust packing out the pads and disturbing the adjustment (which assumes everything is clean when you set it up).
Also see the lever arm on the new EPB brake pad half he holds. That pivot hinge was very stiff on mine but cleaned up to move very freely. Would not help matters being stiff.
