Stuck in Super Extended mode

From your original post you say that you are in off road height and lowering on to jack stands.

As far as I am aware the computer will detect an obstacle while lowering and raise the vehicle to protect the underbelly/chassis from damage. This is how some engage "extended height" while off roading because it is not a setting that can normally be accessed without OBD equipment. I think that what your car has done is what it has been designed to do.

There are more knowledgable heads than mine on here.

Confirm you have a Hitachi compressor and not a AMK.

In the Hitachi while it may be that the issue is normally the opposite - the valve get crude in it and does not close so lets air out (an internal leak). Also when you try to unto the hex housing the head comes off and you are left with something like this.


That is how mine is at the moment - sealed with superglue to keep the air in.

I would be checking the solenoids/valves in the central valve block first before anything else - the central block is where most of the control is exercised. If that is all clean then look at the compressor and do a rebuild - your desiccant may be may be all blocked up and stopping the air getting out when the central control block releases it when you hit the down button.

Just finished replacing the beads, pads and new end cap and just went for a 45 min drive with no faults and the suspension even going back in to access height.

The old beads hadn’t really turned to powder but were certainly degraded and stuck together. I can see why they restrict air flow. The two hardest parts were removing the rear air lines and reinstalling the top bolt. I cannot remember which post from a search mentioned it, but using a 3/8 socket extension with flexible joint and 10mm socket was definitely the best way to reattach the top bolt on the bracket.

I slotted the top slot on mine so you can set the bolt and slip it up, then tighten. I washed the filters, reset the desiccant in the oven, and removed the failed beads last time mine did that. Year later.

Practice makes perfect - can take out and put the compressor in now in less than 10 minutes - (about 2 hours first time) trick is to pull top and bottom covers off first and put them on last - perfect access - also the rear intake and exhaust pipes are cut about 6" back with rubber fuel hose joiners - no nasty connectors to deal with.
