Why don't you get your s/hand one serviced (by turbo shop) , cheaper than new and you can rest assured your not doing all that labour in vain.

I realise this is a very controversial topic however, my 2008 2.7 D3 spray up some turbo error codes together with numerous limp modes and of course the high pitched whining of the turbo. The LRS tells me turbo needs replacing. I have in my possession a 2nd hand turbo with about 115kms on it. Contemplating whether to cut my losses and find the extra cash for a brand new Borg Warner genuine one ($2150).
My heart would like a new one, my bank account says take your chances with the 2nd hand one (has 6 months warranty), and ì am now looking for any expert advice or people with positive or negative experiences with 2bd hand turbo. Would REALLY love to hear from anyone who has had a turbo replaced, or any other expert guidance please.

Good suggestion theelms66. I called the master distributor for Borg Warner (GCG), and was told these turbo cannot be reconditioned.

Any suggestions who in Sydney could recondition the L3 BW turbo?
If it was my car, before taking out the turbo, I would try:
- some induction cleaner in case some build up is affecting the turbo;
- checking the actuator is moving like it should, as this can cause faults;
- put an oil flush through the motor, drop the oil and refill, to help ensure turbo oil feed & drain is clear.

Getting the old turbo out with body on is a real feat of creative tool making.
This to check the actuator which explains one of the pre and post start noises from the engine bay.

How much do they want for the used one?
How many km has the original done?
How much is the quote to change?
Can you hear the actuator moving freely when you turn the ignition on, and when you turn it back off?
Are there any oil leaks on top of the motor under the cover?
Have you checked the long intercooler pipe that runs down to the intercooler past the airbox?
I only ask so many questions as they are an absolute bear to change..

You say you've already got the second hand unit and it's still got 6 months warranty on it. Does that cover installation costs in the even of failure during that period? If you've already got it have you already forked out the cost for this and therefore that money is lost now regardless of your choice?
How many kms on your current turbo? That might give you an indication on the remaining service life of the used turbocharger that you have given you know what it's already done.
Are you paying for installation costs or DIY so it's not a factor? I ask as if the installation costs are high then the extra for a new unit becomes more worthwhile to prevent spending on the installation costs again in the nearer future. If your doing it yourself and time/effort is not a major factor then sounds like it would be worth trying the used unit.
