Mods need to move this to D3/4 section.
Hi Guys
I have a miss in the engine across all rev ranges including idle. It is lacking power when driving. There are no error codes. Can things like MAF, EGR, O2, throttle position or any other sensor be out enough to cause the miss, but not throw a code? Can anyone provide a list of possibilities for causes?
I'm really hoping that it's not the chains and guides. How can I check if it is the chains and guides? If it is, is it a body off, then engine out job?

If it is chains then it is a body off or engine out job as one of the chains is at the rear of the motor.

1997-2011 Ford 4.0L (Explorer/Mustang/Ranger) timing replacement (Cloyes kit# 9-0398S - YouTube
You need Ford Special tools to do it successfully, and I wonder who these days will have the tools seeing so few Explorers were sold.
Good Luck!

PS these engines are pretty cheap from a Ford Dealer in the USA .
US $2599 for remanufactured engine or about $750 for a second hand one(which would probably have the same problems)

Hi PhilipA
Many thanks for the link. He makes it look easy.
There are very few timing after market timing chain kits on the market specifically for the LR3, but there are many for the explorer. Does the Cloyes kit# 9-0398SB on the video fit the LR3 engine?
To gain access to replace the chains, if I lift off the body, can I get sufficient access to the rear chain or is the bell housing in the way? The video shows the engine already on a stand.
TIA

Sorry but you have exhausted my knowledge. There are very few timing after market timing chain kits on the market specifically for the LR3, but there are many for the explorer. Does the Cloyes kit# 9-0398SB on the video fit the LR3 engine?
However it would be unusual for LR to change anything about a bought in engine's internals.
They will change sumps, maybe fuel injection etc but usually the core engine is as supplied.
Examples are Ford 2.3 turbo in Discovery Sport, Ford 5l supercharged. In these instances I have seen videos of mechanics (Car Wizard, Samcrac) where they used Ford parts to repair engines.
The 4L V6 was supplied only to Australia so even someone in the USA would probably not know for sure.
So I would think the Cloyes kit would be OK but I don't know that for sure.
You are still left with the problem of the Ford timing lock kit. If you can find someone who has a kit chances are he/she will know about the timing chain kit.
