    Query on Cruise Control

Never had anything like this happen before.
Driving west between Pt Hedland and Karratha today pulling the brick with 2.7L/6 speed auto. Pretty flat overall.
    Noticeable headwinds for second half.
Cruise sitting on 92 (= 90.5 on gps)
About 60 km from Karratha car started to slow as if running out of puff. If I put my foot down on accelerator, would build back up to 92, then once foot off would slowly drop back down to low/mid 80s. Went back to normal roughly about the same time as the wind dropped, but rpm were pretty normal at varying speeds throughout.
No slippage in gears, operating temps a bit high with high 30's ambient, but nothing haven't had before - eg 127 engine oil, 106 ATF, 107 coolant - all on GAP too.
Gearbox was rebuilt under warranty at 160K km, and now on 270K km (includes 30K km towing the brick)
    Any thoughts?

That is similar to what happens up hills with the LR cruise control. The car slows down, probably on full throttle, until it decides to change gear and then speeds back up to the set speed. Sounds to me like it was on full throttle into the wind and not quite at the point where it changes down so it never sped up. If you manually dropped a gear it would probably have been able to hold 90. Mine drops to mid 80's before changing down a gear. Even the D5 is the same, but it stays a bit closer to the set speed than the D4.

Ta. Sounds plausible, even though I'm travelling in 5th (six speed box) at just under 2,000 rpm with oversize tyres, but if I manually intervene via extra throttle, it then picks up, albeit gradually.

I'll try dropping a gear next time it happens. Cheers

Tried that on several occasions. The D4 in Sports mode is quite different to the D2 auto.
The following comments relate to towing my block of flats.
Since fitting the resistors for trailer indicators in particular, I can find no difference in normal D4 performance between normal Drive and Sports modes, except that depending on speed and hill steepness, I will sometimes flick across to Sports and over-ride to get a lower gear - overcomes the strange hesitancy to down-shift automatically on occasions. However, Sport but in drive mode as opposed to selected gear/s will hold a lower gear longer on steep uphill.
