I'm guessing it's displaying proportional locking ie between no lock to full lock up...which is very smart.
Hi all,
I have a 2013 D4 HSE and found my way to the 4x4i screen recently while beach driving. Can someone please explain what the diff lock display tells me?
I expected to see the centre and rear diff's auto locking/unlocking by turning red/green, which it does. What I didn't expect to see were different colour options for each third of the border surrounding each diff lock symbol (changing between white and red). I couldn't find anything in the D4 manual.
I've attached example photos of the different display status's.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Regards,
Sachmo

Yes, as INter674 says, the diff locks are "infinitely" variable, but for clarity the display is limited to thirds. I envy your e-diff.

Like they said, especially the envy bit.
To add a bit more clarity - these LR diffs don’t just have a rigid locking mechanism, they have an electrically-operated clutch pack which the TR computer adjusts many times a second to try and find the right balance between allowing differential shaft speeds versus reining in a loss of traction. You’ll see the diffs pre-emptively part locked when taking off from a standstill to ensure good traction overall.
Our SC launches like a dragster even in the wet..with both symbols going red☺
It really comes into its own in the snow but can catch you out as acceleration and stopping on slippery surfaces are very different things🙄
Thanks to you all for taking the time to clear this up for me! I had thought of diff as on/off, rather than variable. Much appreciated!
Now that sounds fun! Not sure if I'll ever get the chance. I'm in Queensland so my experience has been in sand! Still learning, was my first time on the beach. Followed the basics which were recurring no matter where I read (eg. DSC Off, tyre pressure) and had a very enjoyable time. Disco didn't skip a beat, really surprised me how seamlessly it handled things. Can't wait to do again. And again...
