    Minor electrical hiccup.

    Hi folks,

No idea if it’s standard but I have 2 cigarette lighters on the front console of my 2012 D4. The right hand one has packed up. (It’s getting no lektrikity) I have checked fuses F52 and F53. They appear to be ok. I swopped over fuses then lighters and left lighter always works but not the right. I removed centre console to see if there was anything problem on the wiring but all looks ok as far as I can follow it. On fuse layout diagram on glove box there is what looks like another ciggie lighter relay? Numbered R3. Would this have anything to do with things? Any help gratefully appreciated as I run my TPMS through this outlet.

    Cheers
    Pete W.

Did you measure the voltage at the fuse, while the fuse was in place?

Sorry, this can be a slow process or just phone me over the weekend.

    Hi Tim,
Ok, tried that, 12v going into both ciggie lighter fuses. But still only one working. I have tries swopping everything around and same one refuses to light up. I will earth the live of that one to another earth and see if that helps, I assume it will at least show me if it’s the earth or live wire that’s packed up.
    thanks

Hi again Pete, at the cig socket, try measuring from the positive ( + ) wire at the back of the socket to an earth point some where near the socket.

If you have a voltage reading, then the problem is most likely as you posted above, a bad earth.

If there is no voltage reading, then the problem is not likely to be fixed with a separate earth. You just have to play detective, and find where the wiring runs from the fuse panel to the socket and see if there is a break or loose plug and socket some where along the wire.
