I made the hole through the plate just large enough to get 2 fingers on it.
Made sure to deburr it to prevent injury.

Now what I'd really like is a dipstick and life with the D4 will be complete until........
AlanH.
You know why they don’t have dipsticks.
Because most dipsticks won’t check them.
The sensor has direct input to the ECU.
If the dipstick doesn’t check their oil and it drops too low the ECU will protect the vehicle.
I have a 2.7 and do check. I’d be much happier if it could do it from the dash!
I agree. I guess though, some engines (VW for example) have a sensor to detect low oil and and a dipstick while D4 went overly smart. I think that an electronic low level alert and a dipstick is a better outcome than an all in one level indicator on the dash. TBH though, for most, as long as the electronics tells them in time they need to add oil, they’re happy.

As Tombie said most don't lift the bonnet.
And the other problem with dipstick and oil fill caps is the ability to introduce dirt and contamination.
The vast majority of people just aren't clean enough performing these simple tasks.
I'm guessing that's one of the major reasons the dipstick was removed from AT's twenty years ago.
Recessed plug holes in DOHC engines are in the same boat. It doesn't take much to blow and clean them out but I bet most backyard blokes don't do it.
I was thinking more of the ability of being able to check if the stealers had actually changed it if I should ever have to entrust it to them for a service while away from home. I check everything regularly under the bonnet and the car just to make sure.
Electronics have provided good advances but nothing like a DIY simple system with some things.
