With Bi-Xenons/HIDs the shutter is needed as the HIDS take too long to light up to use with Hi beam - hence the shutter as the HID globe is on all the time while the lights are on and the shutter moves to provide hi/lo beam and the halogen infill provides the flash function.

On an all halogen fitted vehicle there is no need for a shutter as low beam is provided by the outer light and high beam provided by the inner light.

I would be interested to hear from any other D3/D4/L320 owners who have shutters with halogen globes as originally fitted as I have not heard or seen this before - have been know to be wrong before.
    Close!

The shutter is there because the Arc bulb is single arc and a shutter cuts the upper section for low beam. They still “jump” for flash - and a HID will flash on first strike before cooling and building up.

Later D4s use the shutter in filament set ups as they only have a single filament bulb in play.

It'd be interesting to watch the cut-off with a retrofit LED bulb then. These might actually be a light assembly you can safely retrofit with LEDs on the low beam that don't spew glare at oncoming and leading traffic.

Correct, although I’d never replace the xenon version with LED. That’s going backwards!

I have actually since replaced the parkers/driving lights globes with a dual brightness LED but it's a little too bright IHMO
Would you be able to post a link or pm me which globes you bought to replace the parkers? I have installed nice white LEDS for the headlamps and want to now match their colour and get rid of the aweful yellow globes. I'm not sure they are H7's or W5w wedge style LEDs.

Assuming you have the same lights as mine - halogen's with shutter - and the parkers are the lower inner globe (label B in the picture I posted earlier). Then it's a T20 globe. Stedi has them listed as T10 but they were wrong and replaced them for me. The stedi T20 LED bulbs are dual brightness.
