A preventative re-gas every couple of years is more than a good idea. If you want your A/C to last, make sure it has enough gas to properly transport the lubricant. They will still "get cold" with enough of a deficit to cause impaired lubrication.

As per mandatory requirements, there is no such thing in a modern vehicle.
If the refrigerant disappears, the system leak must be located and repaired. The system cannot be filled with refrigerant if it is leaking.

The hoses and seals on modern vehicles donÂ’t leak, like they did 25 plus years ago.
I noticed my a/c was slow too cool a few times in summer, and then in winter a few times it wasn't demisting the car windows, so when it was in for it's service my mech sent it to his a/c guy who found 200g vs the 480 grams it should have in it when he pumped it down, IIRC he pulled a vacuum/ leak tested it all day/over night with nothing found, so charged it up to it's proper value and it works very well now, cold enough to make my hand ache with the vent directed at it. I hope the extra gas will carry the oil around much better now and so avoid a compressor/valve replacement.
