(1 Jan 2016) unmolested TDV6 with 50K on the clock and in immaculate condition. The 2.7 rides better/softer, and has lots of goodies, but at 280K (even though a high proportion was highway km) was getting a bit long in the tooth for a non mechanic like me to take the bride away with peace of mind for her.

So now to find an appreciative owner for the much loved and cossetted (except when towing the brick) 2.7L

Oh and I'm trying out the 5 year extended warranty plan for the first time in my life - silly bugger!
Congrats on the purchase Gav, very jelous.

One of the best marketing achievements in history was to convince humans we want to keep replacing things. Losing All electrics after trying to insert GAP Tool

16.5 model is very nice though and he will get much enjoyment out of the extra gears and torque - especially with the van on.

Personal opinion only, but I would never use a Nanocom on anything newer than a TD5. A Nanocom can be problematic at times on their own without connecting to a problematic at times car.

apart from Pippin's comment, I'm not sure that the Nanocom can give as much instrument mode information as the veritable plethora available with the GAP Tool. Really spoilt for choice with the GAP - alternatively, maybe consider a BBS IQ, which can be left in permanently? Have to admit, I'm not too keen on the IQ black background display with my old eyes, but would be worth talking to EricSDV6 if interested as he has one.

My gut feel is that its loose pins in the OBDII port (or not previously considered, potentially in the GAPTool?) that is shorting out and causing mayhem for me, but time will tell.
As discussed I don't think it was a GAP tool issue, I'm going to fork out the big bucks and get a GAP tool for the workshop as it seems to be able to offer a lot of functionality that other more expensive diagnostic tools wont do. MORE importantly their product support seems to be good, from info gathered here.

As I mentioned to Gav, I do tend to plug in diagnostic gear on the fly on most vehicles I work on all the time, but I'm not casual about it and do it with purpose and visually looking at the plug, I dont plug it in using braille.

As to why it froze in the first place, that takes us back to connecting the GAP Tool options, with Darren's recommendation to always do it from the kneeling position with direct line of sight to the port, and never whilst the ignition/power is on!

Unfortunately, my bride does not see such brilliance as shades of grey, and no longer has blind faith that we will always get to our destination whilst towing the brick, so a replacement vehicle is on the agenda. and/or
*I wouldn't have said "he quickly ascertained" more like as someone else said "a sleepless night thinking about other peoples problems" but other peoples problems are my customers with vehicle faults.
*Like any software its only actually engineered to work a percentage of times and the fact that really on the whole software is generally on the lower end of issues.
*While I've not had the kvm module or part of it lock up on a D4, I have had Range Rovers in the past that did this due to other module on the can bus fail.
*Dont know why the hard reset doesnt always work, but removing the fuse for the kvm module does work unless of course its a fault with other modules as above, which would have been the next course of action.
*Cant / wont help with non-related vehicle issues (brides etc etc) because if I say "naaa should be good now, its all sorted" the next time (something goes wrong) I will be in the same boat as the D4 owner.

    ho hum such is life.

I suspect you still have an intermittent problem waiting to come back - but I won’t tell anyone when you are trying to sell the D4. For now just have to put it down to “Don’t try to connect the GAP tool when driving”.

Brilliant that Darren made the connection to the Keyless Vehicle Module needing a reset.

P.s. Gavin - you should provide GAP Diagnostics feedback by e-mail on the outcome so they can add to their own knowledge base.
*I dont think there is any other intermittent problem (without the fact that it's a D4).
*Wasnt so brilliant from where I was sitting, everytime I reduce the breakdown or problem vehicles here, something else takes its place.
*Currently have a ZERO list of breakdowns/problematic vehicles, just lots of Defenders for the Defender upgrade list.

Mike, I'm usually the eternal hoarder (with a full 40' x 9'6" high seatainer to prove it) and normally the 2.7 would have just about seen me out, which was my intention. I'd much rather repair than replace until it becomes truly uneconomic - I still have T shirts from 40 years ago and the shoes I got married in 48 years ago.

    But, happy wife ......
Just got back from a quiet lunch in the Swan Valley - 7.7l/100 km on the dial - even though probably wildly optimistic, never saw anything like that with the 2.7 and 'er indoors had a lovely siesta on the way back with me sitting on 100 in the Roe Highway bits that aren't under reconstruction.

Shouldn't that be 16.1 Gavin as Jan is the first month of the year? Mine was built June 2016 so I've always thought of it as being a 16.5. Or am I doing things wrong?
