    D4 19" wheel & tyre offroad suitability

I have recently purchased my first ever Discovery, a 2014 D4 SDV6. The thing has enjoyed a very easy life thus far having barely seen a dirt road since new (previous owner didn't like getting it dirty apparently).
I am currently preparing for a trip to Cape York (ex Brisbane) in August this year and am putting together a list of upgrades required before we start our journey north.
My shopping list includes all the usual items including under body protection, roof rack, diagnostic tool etc. however where I can't seem to make a decision is with the wheels and tyres.

It's currently rolling on the standard 19" wheels with 255/55/R19 All Terrains (Pirelli Scorpion) and I'd like to know if this size tyre is equipped to tackle parts of the old telegraph track? Or any rutted, rocky track for that matter.

I have priced up some 18" steel wheels (Tuff Ant) and tyres to match however I would essentially only use these for this trip then be stuck with 5 used wheels and tyres. The Disco is used mainly to tow a boat on the highway and do the occassional run up the beach so I'd see little need for the 18" wheel set outside of this trip.

Can anyone shed some light on the suitability of the standard wheels for my trip (with brand new AT's) or if I really do need to bite the bullet and shell out a l ittle over $3K for the 18" wheel & tyre set.

    Cheers

    D4 19" wheel & tyre offroad suitability

I switched to an LT 19” which have been better than other 19” I’ve used, but 19” is a definite compromise. The Disco will go nearly anywhere with low pressures, but at low pressures you’ve got limited sidewall available. I’ve staked I think three 19” in the sidewall from low pressures and hitting a rock on the wall. Haven’t had it happen with the LT but I think it’s still a higher likelihood. I just don’t off-road enough to warrant another set of wheels so I compromise.

Yeah that's currently the way I'm leaning. I'm fully aware of the compromise and that even if I take it slow and steady the threat of a sidewall puncture on a deflated 19" is still high.
I just can't seem to justify the expense of a full set of wheels & tyres for a single use. Then again, there's every chance I could come to regret this decision.... and I'm back to my dilema

I bought another 19” secondhand to cover myself for longer trips.

    D4 19" wheel & tyre offroad suitability

Bite the bullet with 18’s. Tyre choice is massive compared with 19’s.

I have a set of 5 Compomotive wheels on my D4 with Falken Wildpeak tyres - best tyres I’ve had, ever - amazing off road, brilliant (and quiet) on road. Comfortable ride.

I leave mine on all the time. 19’s are round the back of the shed collecting dust.

Stick a set of 19" Maxxis LT's on it & enjoy the trip. The difference between 18's & 19's is all theoretical hearsay mumbo jumbo. Leave hurry at home, take it easy when things get rough.

I have compos with 265/60/18 wild peaks and am very happy with this set up. But consider the pros and cons of going to 18s.

    The pros:
    • more sidewall, which is better for lower pressure situations, and a bit more cushioning which will help out the suspension;
    • a bigger range of tyres to choose from, compared to 19”. However, I would balance that by saying there’s not many 18” 265/60/18’s with a big load rating which is an indicator of side wall strength.
    • 265/60/18 is a common size so it will be easier to buy a replacement when on the road compared to 19”.
    • 265/60/18 is a bigger tyre so does lift the vehicle and give more clearance without any apparent impact on handling.

    The cons:
    • it’s a big cost, considering the 19” tyres now available which will be ok in most offroad situations. And the range of 19” tyres is improving. I’ve taken my 19” ATs on the beach without issue. Also you will also be up for a new spare if you go to 265/60/18 tyres as 19” standard tyre is smaller.

IMHO it’s a tough decision, especially where the pros are only relevant occasionally. I was fortunate to get a reasonable set of tyres/rims 2nd hand, although the tyre type was not much good.

I run Maxxis 19" LTs on my 2016 D4 and although not overly enthusiastic about them and their longevity, they do the job. I too debated whether to go for 18" and the increased availability of a wider range of tyres etc. but didn't like the thought of wasting 5 rims (no resale value) and tyres for the few trips we do off road.
The only time we had problems with the Maxxis was on a trip up through the Pilbara and got punctures in the one tyre (out of the 5 new tyres I had fitted) with a different manu date that I had complained about to the supplier. However in the end we compromised and I got a reduced price replacement and at this stage will continue to run with them for the off road use we do.
Possible replacement vehicle is on the cards in the not too distant future so I'm not bothered about getting new rims just for the sake of something possibly happening.

The difference off road. Will be just hit it faster.
I have a set of Tuffants in the shed for off road, beach and rego days, if I was near you.. I'd let you take them north.. Maybe someone will chime in and rent you a set.. I drink allot of beer and changing them over is a good excuse.. But the cost isn't.. I've done a track with bald 20s with GOE when he was still a thing.
Training with the car will far outweigh tyres in my opinion. Learn the terrain system by an expert! Some will disagree.. But we're they trained?
Ultimately you'll get bogged eventually, maybe even a flat.. Whether it would happen with both a 19 or 18 is really only something people can estimate

    265/60/18 has 12mm bigger diameter than 255/55/19.
This, I believe, equates to an extra 6mm between the bottom of the wheel rim and the ground.
Not really much improvement in sidewall height or ground clearance, eh?
The biggest advantage of the 18 inch rim is a larger choice of tyre brands, and with LT rating.
