EPB fault - where to from here?

I was out in Lerderderg yesterday and got an EPB fault at the least convenient time. We'd stopped to assess the depth of a bog hole, went to disengage the park brake to take off followed by the loud unmistakable squealing noise then fault. EPB was stuck on. luckily the manual release worked and we were able to continue back home.

Where do I go from here? Once the manual release has been pulled can the EPB work again or does it require some form of resetting/reconnecting? I've read through bodsy's brake bible about adjusting the EPB so I'm hoping that is all that will be required.

    Thoughts/advice?

Every time I’ve had the SOD (Screech of Death) and fault alarm I’ve been able to get it to release by cycling ignition and trying again. Then don’t use it till adjusting it and all works perfectly again.

When using in boggy mud conditions or even just the accumulation of brake dust on the shoes can upset the tolerance and inadvertently confuse and cause this fault without the system being out of adjustment per se.

So that’s why it’s worth cleaning them out with a water hose through the adjustment hole from time to time. The dust buildup is immense.

Regards resetting I’d bet there’s a YouTube video on the subject.

I tried cycling the engine a few times and clearing the fault with the iid but no luck had to pull the cable.

ah great! that was going to be my next question - can I clean them out without having to remove the callipers and discs to get physical access to the shoes.

Yes remove wheel, remove rubber grommet and blast away. You’ll need both wheels off the ground to turn it which lets you get at all the pad surface and mechanism. Plenty off dirt will flow out.

    Then make adjustment.

It appears to have come good. I started the car this morning and got a message the park brake is disengaged, lift to apply and it started working again.

All the same I removed the rear wheels, blasted water through the adjustment hole and set about adjusting the shoes.

One of the drums didn’t have the plastic plug in the adjustment hole which may have lead to significant ingress of mud contributing to the fault. What have people used to plug the hole? How hot does the sun housing get - could I cut a piece of rubber to fit?

You could use literally any rubber bung like from a small dinghy or even some tape over the hole. It’s not super important as water gets in anyway around the perimeter if you are going through deep water.
