    Poor Performance D4

Over the weekend I went on a weekend trip with a club. On just about any difficult climb I had to end out getting the winch out because as soon as the car started to loose traction the motor would just just "die". By that I mean it would feel like I had just lifted my foot off the pedal. I was in Low range paddle selected 2nd gear and despite giving it the berries as soon as the the hill became a bit steep it just lost power. I also tried every traction mode, with HDC and the anti skate switched off. No error messages to see. Any body got any ideas? TIA

Turn off Dynamic Stability Control. It is enabled by default and will be re-enabled when you turn the ignition back on, so you have to manually disable it whenever you shift into low range. Also, just a hint, enable Hill Descent Control when climbing a steep slope. Handy if you stall or need to stop. Disable it for going downhill. Simply select low one or two and let the engine braking keep you slow and steady and just tap the brake every now and again if needed.

Thanks DieselLSE but I did have DSC switch off. I just called it Anti skate. Bit of a bugger as I had the car remapped and the ERGs blanked. I just wonder if that has caused other issues?

Simples - even though you had DSC off - with too many berries it will kick back in as a safety measure even though DSC is off.

The vehicle responds best with a firm throttle providing moderate to high power but if you give it "berries" - DSC will just kick in and kill engine power and apply brakes as needed.

Slow and steady wins the race.

In this particular case the track was steep slippery clay with big wash outs. The trip was a club one organised as a winching course (which it was for me). It need momentum to between wash out to climb over them. But when you have a rear diff lock a tricked motor and you cannot get up but a unlocked stock standard 2005 hilux flat tray with no lockers at all flies up you just have to wonder what is the issue!! My previous 4WD would have eaten this for breakfast! Thats why I am wondering what went wrong or is it a car issue!

Took car to Indi and No code faults.!! Driving in Low Range turning circles could feel the car "jerking". Not clunking but like something was grabbing and then releasing. He feels it may be clutches in the transfer box as it does not do it in HR. Left **** box with him. Dont know when I will get it back. Luckily I bought a Mazda on Monday and collected it yesterday. So still have wheels with some limited 4wd!! Ha HA. (Probably could do as well as the LR as I just watched a Video of a CX5 doing the Simpson Desert). I am now I think about to experience the LandRover Money Pit!!

Sounds like a problem known as "Driveline Shunt". I have seen a manual calibration procedure to address this on a couple of the pommy Disco 3 web sites, but much easier to correct using a IID tool.

Mine did this a while back after (I suspect) getting some water splashed up onto one of the computer connections under the bonnet. Thought I would have to put it on a truck for a 600km trip to Perth. Turned out to be the transfer case calibration had gone out. There is a calibration program in the IID tool for this - I ran it and the fault corrected - have not had a return of the issue since.

I could definitely feel the car shuddering when turning any corner - even just pulling out of the back yard into the laneway (forward or reverse) - and the problem was there in both low and high range. I did get an error code come up on the IID tool though (can't remember what it was) that pointed me in the right direction.

Recalibration of the transfer case is the normal fix if you’re getting transmission windup as mentioned.

Finally got the car back yesterday. Took the car directly to a slippery steep hill. Roared up no problems at all. Indy did a TC oil change and recalibtration. He showed me the oil from it and it looked very "dark". It did not smell "burnt". We discussed what had happened since the March service where he knows he looked at the oil in the TC and diffs because he knew I was getting the Auto done in Dandenong. At that time he said everything was fine. I had not done any 4WDing or towing so he is just as amazed as i am as to a possible cause. I do know that for the whole weekend which was advertised as a RR Club winching trip I was (as was everybody else) giving it heaps. Hopefully it has been fixed and only cost me a oil change. Oh how I wish I still had a basic mechanical 4WD train with the luxury of the D4 all rolled into one. Seems like I am dreaming.......zzzzzzz

Just a case of adapting to the new tech.

Once you adapt, the vehicle will appear unstoppable.
