The patch is required on the EU4 models. In my case it was built 11/07 MY08.

Mine is 01/08 and all was working fine, it was atleast 4 or 5 yrs ago that I tried it, still have the same egrs on the car and they were left connected , just used the plates and removed the butterfly. After about 2 weeks of varied amounts of limp mode faults I put them back and just clean the Y piece usually every oil change.

Yes if the EGRs are fully functioning you do not need a patch when EU4 are blanked - no eml comes on. The issue is how long will the EGRs keep functioning when blanked - the patch gets around this.
In my car things are different and I have mentioned it before. Back in 2012 my EGRs failed, before patches etc. I had bought two new EGRs at a very good price but when I looked at what a pain it was to put them in I just blanked the system and of course that was OK except the EML stayed on but the car ran fine.
In tinkering around I plugged the new EGRs into the wiring harness with the old EGRs still connected to the exhaust. Car ran fine and eml went out.
So nearly 8 years later, the original broken EGRs are still connected to the exhaust, the system is still blanked and I have two brand new EGRs sitting in the ABS box in the engine bay, plugged into the EGR wiring loom. They open and close as directed by the ECU and send the right signals back to the ECU. The cost of the EGRs were about half the cost of the subsequent electronic patches, I saved my knuckles from having to put in new EGRs and it all works perfectly and with EML or codes.

Blanking plates are cheap, not sure if its something I can tackle but will have a look.

If you get the ones with the slots you can loosen up the bolts, slide the plate in above the gasket and tighten them back down.
Originally I put a gasket on both sides of the plate to mitigate boost leakage from the top which made it a bit tighter and necessitated removal of the bolts to get the gasket in.
It's not difficult, just fiddly. I eventually ended up "losing" the pipework and just fitting covers to the EGR valves.
