Mine doesn't leave any trail.. Just a smell, the lack of pressure allows the coolant to boil off. Although mine took a couple month's to need a top up.

Had same thing on my D3.
The plastic fitting at the front of the engine, in the “V” was leaking, not enough to drop to the ground, but enough for a hot engine to evaporate and make the smell. Also the plastic fitting has a history of suddenly failing and dropping your entire coolant amount in a very short time.
Heaps of discussion on here about whether replacing wit OEM or Metal fabricated special is the best way to go. It’s one of the easier jobs to do yourself on a Discovery.
