Other than getting it in and out rebuilding the TC is no big deal bearings and chain. All parts available.

But is that the problem??? Who knows I guess without diagnosing it which really means a hoist. It’s not a big enough issue for me to look into it further. One day I’ll get around to getting the Indy to take a look.

My concern is any damage the thud could be doing downstream - assuming its the transfer case, am I now placing undue stress on diffs, drive shafts and their universal joints, etc etc?

Im pretty sure mine is in the gearbox, been there ages. It's not in the transfer case. I dropped it and felt it and lined the rear shaft.

My rear diff also has allot of back lash in it.

    Adds character

Out of interest, as anyone changed the rear drive shaft, with any improvement to this clunk?

So these things have slop in the gearbox, diffs and a chain that stretches in the TC on top of all the other joys? Wow.

Well... Mine is 280k. The noise started in the 170k zone, hasn't got worse. The TC chain stretch to me if a myth, not enough problems to be real, I've spoken to a supplier who regrets keeping stock of the parts, can't sell em!

How much slop is to much? Mine can be corrected with attitude.. So it's probably not a big deal.

    It's all character building
