    EPB Bedding In

    I replaced my rear brake disks and pads yesterday - reset the the EPB shoes - what a PITA job - in the bright sun you cannot see in the hole - my knurled adjusters and 4mm allen key screws were in different positions to that indicated in Bodsy's Brake Bible and when adjusting 8 clicks back - not sure what these clicks are as there are no clicks. So just like all Landrover brakes I just adjusted up until they locked and then backed off until the disk was free to move. Brakes and hand brake all works OK now.

    The question is if the brake shoes and/or the disks are replaced (shoes did not need doing) you are supposed to go into the bedding in procedure which requires a remote road and to drive slow speed - I need to drive about 20km to find a suitable bit of road. So as the brakes and hand brake work fine - is this bedding in procedure really needed?

    Interestingly despite 200,000km and quite a few mud trips over the years, it was only brake dust inside the drum. Also while I replaced the disks, the disks were only half worn at 28.2mm.

    It says it’s needed so I’d suggest it’s needed EPB Bedding In

    The “click” is effectively a notch on the knurled wheel. For each movement you move it about one notch, so think of it as 8 notches

    EPB Bedding In

    A shopping centre car park or sports oval car park is ideal.

    The bedding in is designed to burn off any high spots for maximum contact since you can’t feather the PB in any other way to seat it. If your not parking on steep hills I imagine you won’t notice it.

    If you install the winder 180 degrees different (or previous service guy did) it will tighten and loosen opposite to Bodsy Bible.

    Each side is the mirror or each other.

    It’s not so much a click but a click feeling as the spring slides over the knurled adjuster.

    The PB adjustment design is common to many cars like older BMWs with same concept but manually operated and same adjustment principle.

    Thanks for that - I will wait until I am able to get out to an appropriate piece of road - I cannot see Land Rover mechs doing this.

    The system of trying to look through a little hole is rediculous and typical LR - might be OK on a dull day in the UK but not on a full sun day in Canberra - was never able to actually see the adjuster or the the screw was all done by feel. At the design stage a system similar to drum brakes on older Landrovers with an adjuster nut on the inside of the housing would work a lot better.

    The position of my adjuster and nut is completely different to the Bible and is as installed when built - one thing I noticed is the position is marked on the brakes splash/mud guard with a notch - not mentioned in the Bibles and would have saved a lot of feeling around.

    I did my bedding in on a suburban back road. You accelerate to 30km/h (I think) and pull the handbrake on. You don't need a huge area to do it in, just a quiet one.

    Exactly. I did it on the back streets at 10pm with no traffic. You need to properly enable the EPB bed in process else pulling the handbrake simply engaged the ABS and not the actual handbrake pads (not directed at you Rod)

    I was observed by local officers bedding mine in at 2am.

    Raised some interesting questions and then a breatho before I could go about my business.
