    Major (7yr) service costs

    Brains trust,

Seeking your wisdom on reasonable costs for the major (7yr) service. You know, the ugly one where the timing and cam belts need to be replaced.

I have searched the forum, but haven’t been able to come up with what I am looking for.

A little while back, I had this service done on my mid 2014 D4 HSE at 100,000 kms with my local Indy. I also had a number of items serviced, including the transmission. The service was early in terms of kms, but not age, and we we’re about to head off on an extended multi month trip towing over some reasonably rugged terrain in some remote locations, so figured it was best to get it done.

I went with the Indy as they had a good rep on here and I hadn’t been overly impressed with the dealer, where it had been serviced until the end of the extended warranty.

I was a little surprised at the overall cost of the service, ($7k) as per the attached, and so now, before I go back to the Indy for the next service, I want to get a feel from you good folk as to whether what I was charged was reasonable for what was done. I am not seeking to dispute the charges, just want to make an informed decision before deciding whether I keep going to the Indy or look elsewhere.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

    Hawc

Well, that was a pretty thorough service. Parts and fluids add up quick.

When we got the D3 I had a general service with all filters, coolant, diffs, gearbox & transfer case fluids done and that alone was over $2k.

Nothing jumps out as unreasonable. I'd expect your next service to be at least an order of magnitude cheaper.

Looks good to me too. It all adds up pretty quickly and hence you can see why DIY can save you. You can get the trans fluid much cheaper yourself for example, but then you also have to do the job yourself. They’re in business to make money like anyone else.

    Major (7yr) service costs

Gawd I love DIY when I see that. Only a third was labour. Probs save another 40% buying parts directly from UK. All reasonable and just adds up when you do the lot.

8 litres of LG8 oil at $126 per litre seems exxy. I get LG6 for $35/litre.

Yeah, I've got $1300 in parts sitting in my LR Direct shopping basket at the moment. I'd hate to think what that lot would cost sourced locally ($180 shipping mind you).

I'm puzzled about the 2L of Multi-Trans ATF. Power steering fluid? The Coolant seems pretty reasonable for what is a genuine LR part number too.

The Indy you used is a good operator but has a policy of wherever possible only using Land Rover parts - is a good policy but also charges LR prices for the parts. You can see that with the filters and LG8 - all LR prices. I have always provided my own parts - usually LR/Ford parts but sourced much cheaper.

There is nothing on that list that is over the top but you do need to discuss with the Indy exactly what you want to get done and get an estimate of the cost before hand.

Looks to me like they've taken good care of your vehicle. They are charging recommended retail for (what looks like) genuine parts and their labour charge and hours seem reasonable for the amount of work done. I probably would have also replaced the coolant bottle and water pump and completely flushed the coolant, but this may have been done previously or, in the Indy's opinion, was not yet required. If so, fair enough.
The only query I have is the need to disconnect the air con pipes for the timing belt service. I, too, have rear aircon and no pipes were in the way of my belt change. Mine's a 2013 D4 8 speed, but not HSE, so may be different. Anyway, there would be no point in them doing it if it wasn't necessary, particularly as they freely discuss it on the invoice.

If they did body off for the service, that’s why the AC would be discharged.

True. But they certainly haven't charged the hours for a body off and none of the work done requires it.

Well some do persist and do a 3L rear belt body on and some refuse to. I’d argue that you could body off it and do that service in 15 hours as charged. Most good Indy’s say they can body off in half a day so that’s one day of the labour and another day for the service work. It adds up to me and explains the AC charge.
