I would have had it done, one less thing to worry about.
Although they are sort of relatively easy to change,so maybe pack a spare for the trip.
As the title says how often should a fuel filter be replaced, D4 3l,
I get that over replacing is not good because it opens the system to contaminates but how long is to long.
The reason I ask is the D4 has just had a service and pre trip inspection before we head off on a 15,000km trip towing the van, the fuel filter was not replaced and hasn't been for about 3 years but the last 2 years have seen minimal km

10 or 20k service for me. Usually depends on whether I have one on the shelf and the time.
I've done mine every 2years regardless of km. I use only Mahle filters. I'd strongly advise to change yours at that age and km, but not on your back in the sand on a 43deg day in Esperance (ask me how I know) they are easy to replace, just note that when you pull them off you do get the filter coming out full of diesel, so you will be spilling some as you have to tip it sideways to clear the crossmember and tank. A tip when you have a new one in, cycle the ignition a few times and let the lp pump in the tank prime the system again, this will limit any air pocket related engine stalls, these sometimes take a bit of cranking to get engine re started, and can put a bit of strain on your battery(ies)
I plan to change my fuel filter out every 50,000km. Every now and again I'll need to change it out early due to clogging, but I always travel with a spare as you never know when you'll get a load of dirty fuel

***** of a job to swap the whole assembly out, so I ended up swapping the water sensor between units. Best fix ever. I was constantly getting the water in fuel errors.
I do my filter every couple of years or around 40,000km. I feel every time you open the sealed system you risk contamination so I try to not over service it.
