Thread: Recovery points - not for off-road?

    Question Recovery points - not for off-road?

    Newbie question... thanks in advance for your experienced responses. (I searched but did not find...).

    The owner's manual says: "The towing points at the front and rear of the vehicle are designed for on-road recovery only." Humph!

    So what tow points can be reasonably be used on a standard vehicle for off-road recovery? Does that mean that a bull bar (with recovery points) is required for the front and a hitch+shackle is required on the rear for off-road recovery?

    Assuming I ignore the manual and use the rear towing point for off-road recovery, is it OK to use a soft shackle directly through the towing point? I ask because the casting feels rough and might cut a soft shackle? Thanks.

    Search on here, has been covered before. IMHO thr factory points at the front and rear are suitable for recovery, off or on road. BTW, you never use a sling directly through the recovery point, always a suitably rated Bow or D shackle, otherwise you will never ever get the sling off the recovery point again.

    I used the front recovery point for an easy job pulling a couples ute out of trouble recently. The lady had tried driving the ute along the tracks either side of deep ruts but slid the rear end in and onto the diff so it bottomed out completely. No equipment at all so out of the goodness of my heart I used mine and got them out easily.
    It's been used before pulling me out of sand with no problems and seems strong.

    As mentioned, have search and you'll see this has been discussed before. You'll even find a video of the recovery point being tested at over 30kph by LR themselves.

    As for rear recovery - no definitely do not use the rear factory tow hitch. It's detachable and it probably will! Use the recovery ring above it that's welded to the chassis.

    As other have said, they are exceptionally strong. I've used mine in many situations with serious recovery loads on them, no issue at all.

    Sharp edges are definitely a concern with soft shackles, strap seem to be tougher and I have seen people put the eye of a strap in the hitch receiver and then the pins thru it. Probably something like this would be better SK/SK+ Hitch – George4x4 4WD Recovery Gear. I'm inclined to think George knows what he is doing as his gear has been use din Antarctica and he seems to drive a Land Rover.

    Sorry for off topic, but it seems in the video they turned OFF the emergency - engine - stop sensor as I could see the car jumped like crazy then kept going. While my D3 jumped over a hump last week (much less jump like in the video) and it immediately stopped the engine leading me to hand steer the car to the side of the road to restart it again.

    I think your vehicle had an issue. Mine has never cut out after some pretty narly mistakes hitting bumps at high speed launching and bottoming out. Not proud of it but car kept going

    Yeah, no such thing. If the airbags haven't gone off, it should keep running.
