Upgrading steering wheel media/phone controls on '07 Disco 3 SE?

    Hey all,

I'm hoping to get some advice on how to improve the steering wheel media & phone controls on my 2007 Disco 3 SE (bought about 6 mths ago with 99K on clock)? I am about to install an 'ATOTO S8 Ultra Plus' which has a 10.1" screen that sits out from the Double DIN facia about 6cm, so no facia modifications necessary. Unit comes will all the bells and whistles but I would like to also upgrade the steering wheel controls from just the standard cruise control buttons to include phone and media buttons that were released on the Sport, and I believe optional on the Disco 3 HSE. I've added an image below of a used unit that is available.

So not knowing a lot about what sits between the steering wheel controls, and the plug that the media centre connects into, I wanted to ask if anyone can give some advice or share their knowledge about whether the steering wheel controls below are just a 'plug and play' swap? Or if wiring and any controllers between the two connection points will prevent the new steering wheel controls from speaking to the new media centre?

For extra info, the car had a high-end Pioneer double din head unit installed with a TV Tuner around 2009/10.

I may answer my own question here, but happy for any alternative solutions to be suggested, I also found an aftermarket provider that have an Aerpro CHLR6C steering wheel control harness that is apparently for the Disco 3 to make the connection between aftermarket head unit and steering wheel controls. Wondering if anyone has any experience with this product?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's an easy swap that I did I my 07 SE, it was plug and play with nothing else needing done.
I then remapped the buttons from within the head unit to change functions, phone buttons also work but needed to add the cutouts on the shroud to fit them.

Don't bother with the left side switch pack, the voice button never works with aftermarket head units.

The right side switch pack is plug & play, the necessary wiring from the wheel to the head unit is there.

You may or may not need the SWC adaptor, most head units these days have "universal" SWC input, but you will probably need to tap the wires at the harness that plugged into the factory head unit.

There is a set of instructions somewhere for the addition of the phone kit, and in there is a to-scale template (when printed at A4) of the cutout required. I taped it onto the bucket on the wheel and went at it with a stanley knife. Perfect fit first time.

I added the switch pack from an RRS, so I have the radar cruise buttons also. I was hoping to use those on the carplay setup, but they are wired into the ECU and not the entertainment unit. I just pretend they are for launching missiles when I come across muppets in traffic.

Thanks BradC for the install instructions, appreciated. Have ordered right side media controls so looking forward to getting it all installed. But, think I should tackle the replacement of the cracked dashboard and cracked plastic console upper storage trays first, so making some calls today to find a new/good used replacement. Might get the new upper dashboard covered with a leather wrap from a UK supplier :-)

Thanks loanrangie . I may get lucky and find a used HSE shroud with cutouts already there during my search for a new/used dashboard (yep, dash is heavily cracked and think I'll replace it before I install the new media gear).
