The fuel temp. sensor seems unlikely to fail as my indie had never seen one go until mine, a couple of days ago. On the scanner it was erratic and would drop to 40 degrees, and was leaking up the inside of the sensor and out the plug at the top which might explain the erratic readings, my indie thinks it might be due to the biodiesel, perhaps eating the glue/resin they use. Could be a blessing in disguise as we've been chasing a leak on the top of the motor for a few weeks, thought it was the fuel cooler at one stage.

That fuel return temp sensor is open to some abuse in removing the air intake which it clips to. Breaking the clip happens very easily which could plausibly crack the body and lead to other problems.
