Read the thread. He’s done numerous smoke tests. 🥱

Oops, righto, thatll teach me for jumping in. I'll get back in my box...
Suggest you do a compression test, and / or pull the cam belt cover to check cam timing
As previously mentioned, air pressure pumped into the intake will just exit through open valves
.
No split hose, intercooler or manifold etc should give a rough idle ( on a diesel ) and white smoke, but low compression due to a bent rod or a piston hitting a valve from wrong cam timing will, unfortunately.
thank you to all replies, some I can do others not that mechanical to undertake
today was a waste of time kinda... re visited the smoke test and rebuilt a new smoke machine at home took half a day...
1. looking at blanking off the intercooler to rule this one out - notice the 3L has two bottom in/outlets and then can pressurise the top intercooler hose to see for leaks (potential next leak test) though now not convinced the intercooler is the problem
2. my newly built smoke tester - pumped a lot of smoke into the top intercooler hose from the top into the intercooler and nothing - dont even know where all the smoke went, came out of nowhere I could see (kinda strange to me...). top empty hole was for my solder iron
have taken the cover off the bottom intercooler hose and will play with the compressor shut off valve tomorrow for any play in shaft, but done for today.
tone of oil came out of the bottom hose as expected... see pic
removed the shut off valve and seems to be good and working no sticking, smoothly open and closes and has strong tension for butterfly opening or closing. looks to be a new replacement part.
now to get this back in place will be a challenge, but can rule out the problem with the shut off valve?
That is the later style valve but I don't recall when they were introduced to production.
I have a similar problem. Did you figure it out ?
Hi shamirj,
i am getting similar symptoms from my Disco 4 MY14. Did you figure out how to fix it, in the end?
Kind regards,
Matt
