D4s got a lowered front roll centre using different knuckles and larger diameter ball-joints. Stiffer front and rear anti-roll bars and shocks were fitted and the interior was significantly upgraded.

    D4 introduced the spectacular 5.0L V8

Smarter battery charging system on all but the 2.7L

Later D4 Facelift introduced the 8 speed gearbox, and removed the 2.7 and 5.0 engines. A supercharged petrol arrived, also pretty rare.

All but the 2.7L D4 have a minimum 19" wheel (OEM) or 18" if going aftermarket (Tuffant, Moab, etc)

Various computer upgrades as mentioned, though within the D4 world, the earliest car can be flashed to perform like the latest car.

CANBus is upgraded, and no longer flips out if a brake light bulb is blown. In fact, there are no brake lights, now all LED

No longer flips out with trailer LEDs like the D3 did

Suspension etc all seems the same, or close enough across all model years, so they drive basically exactly the same way.

    Loadspace is identical
Plus slight chassis change in front wheel wells that limits tyre size when steering at full lock.
I prefered the D4 interior and instruments especially in the higher trim levels.

I borrowed a mates 16.5 D4 for a week but it only made me appreciate the simplicity and fit for purpose nature of my 08 SE more. Love the centre cup holders adjacent the gear lever. Prefer the suspension and Hi/Lo levers in rear of console. Open storage above the radio and best of all a real key not the fob which is sort of floating around all the time. Oh and a real gear lever.

I actually prefer the earlier seats are more teutonic and cleaner lines than the latter which are more sofa like.

I actually now prefer the OG all analog dash console, grill, headlights and tail lights D3 look to the latter.

The grunt of the 3.0 to 2.7 is night and day though. I’ll also concede the D4 had a better tow hitch.

Oh and last but not least the wheel arches and trim should never have been colour coded. Black is best. The difference to RRS was lost at that minute I never understood.

Aaaaand………….L A N D R O V E R on the bonnet is best. To be then mixed up as some close relation to the Freelander come Disco Sport was just insulting Difference between Disco 3 and 4

Did I mention 18s as standard wheels

First thing I bought when we got the D3. Being a UK import ours came with the ball hitch, so I ordered a new D4 hitch from the UK. I see why the call the original D3 hitch the plow.
