I have had little sticks and pebbles get into the hand brake drums on the rear wheels (no, not the brake calipers, the brake drums). It makes a scratching, rubbing noise as the wheel rotates. Comes and goes as the stick/ pebble gets jiggled about within the drum lodging and dislodging on the brake mechanism. Alternatively it could be worn out drum shoes.

Remove the rear wheels, then remove the brake disc with which the brake drum is integrated to, ie the rear brake disc and brake drum are one piece. Clean out drum or replace pads as needed.

    Videos will explain it.

    Thank you.
It sort of makes sense that the drum parking brakes could be the problem as nothing unusual would show up on the underbody checks.
The noise is not a screeching noise but something loose in there sounds a distinct possibility.
Hopefully we can keep going OK and sort this out at the next service.
    Cheers

Pull the wheel off and have a good look. Spin the disk and also check the inside of the rim for marks.

I had a rattle on my car not long after purchasing during a dirt run drive. Turned out one of my brake carrier bolts was loose and I lost it.

Keep looking before it gets expensive and dangerous.

Just back in service. Thanks for the suggestion which I will take on board.
    Our rattle is intermittent.
Can you please advise if in your case the rattle was continuous.
    Cheers

Think I have found the likely cause of the problem.
I have been focussing on the front wheel where the noise seemed to be coming from.
Have now removed the back wheel and found the disc brake shield had been distorted by some sort of big impact.
This resulted in a big gap at the leading edge between the disc and shield, inviting small stones etc in and out.
New shield required at next service but hopefully no major issue involved.
Thanks for the help from this great forum.

    Was the shield loose?
