It’s very easy to determine the direction to undo the fan, it doesn’t matter if it’s diesel, petrol, serpentine belt, or V-belt.
The fan always undoes in the same direction that the fan rotates.
Think about it and you will understand why.
THANK YOU ALL!
job done, I went anti clockwise, and it only needed a gentle tap by a heavy hammer, and it came off..
What a nightmare when you don't know..
I've fitted a new idle pulley, the old one was making noise and once out, I could hear something lose on inside of it.. lucky i've noticed it in time.
New belt, all good drives good and cannot hear that noise from pulley again.
Thank you again!
Now experienced, you'll never again try so hard or for so long before trying the other direction.
haha True mate. Being 6.5 and 95 kg I thought, nahh this is way too tight :)
Thank you all, it's great when people help!
I've only just read this thread and it reminds me of when I had a problem on a 300Tdi Defender moons ago. I took it to a recommended independent 'expert' in Osborne Park and when I got it back I opened the bonnet for a look and was shocked to see big chisel marks in the fan nut!
Back to the 'expert' and he mumbled some rubbish about me not knowing what I was talking about and this was necessary to remove the fan etc etc. but I got a new hub out of them (after a very nasty argument) and I replaced it as I wasn't having him touch my car ever again.
AlanH.
Well unless you know you are blind like I was :) Thanks to the gents it saved me a trip to mechanic , $ and I learned a good lesson too.
Our old D2 used to be serviced my "experts" my wife used to take it to mechanics all the time, until I saw they were charging her $300 bucks to change the oil...
One of them even took her car to do deliveries in the area until we noted the km... Crazy. You have to learn and do as much as you can yourself, just like anything in life.
