Thread: D4 2013 3.0TDV6 too much oil causes engine runaway

G'day everyone, it's been over a month now since my son borrowed my D4. He did the right thing, checked the oil, didnt understand that unavailable meant you had to follow another procedure to check oil level and over filled it trying to get a reading. I told him he needed to drain the oil out, driving it back to his place the engine started to runaway burning excess oil. He managed to stop the engine before it really got away. Anyway, drained oil and refilled to correct level (overfilled by three litres :-( ) drained out all the intercooler and pipe work. He managed to start it after all the oil had drained out, rough and burning oil but running. was able to respond to throttle. we left it for another day of draining. Next day, car will not start. Took it to Rangie heaven...trust Damien with my chainsaw!...he gave me the bad news, she's stuffed. In too deep with finance to dump it, Damien hasnt got the time to rebuild for me so Im on my own. Got enough equipment to perform body off and I follow Christian on LR Time enough to have a go at rebuilding myself. I cannot get the thing to fire myself, it sounds like only one cylinder is down on compression but I'd like to know if its sensors or fuel or engine itself thats is causing it not to fire up.

The problem is. I have not been able to find a post from anyone in my predicament on any landy forum that I follow. Do I stump up for the GapIID? WHat will I find inside this thing when I lift the heads off, will it be rebuildable or do I just try and find a good S/H engine and replace? ANy advice appreciated. For me, Damien was my goto and he is just swamped out. Service bookings alone are at least three to four months in time. You book for your next service at same time as you get a service done. Resurrecting my old TDi300manual D1 as a backup so I'm not reliant on using my Wife's D4 Alpine.

A Gap tool will read codes for vehicles other than the registered vehicle.

What was stated as the damage?

If you decide to fit another engine which includes the turbos then at least a V3 Gap tool will be required to calibrate the turbine shut-off valve, or get a nearby workshop to do that.

Edit: Maybe it was obvious that the crank is broken. The engines often will run, sort of.
