D4 2013 3.0TDV6 too much oil causes engine runaway

G'day everyone, it's been over a month now since my son borrowed my D4. He did the right thing, checked the oil, didnt understand that unavailable meant you had to follow another procedure to check oil level and over filled it trying to get a reading. I told him he needed to drain the oil out, driving it back to his place the engine started to runaway burning excess oil. He managed to stop the engine before it really got away. Anyway, drained oil and refilled to correct level (overfilled by three litres :-( ) drained out all the intercooler and pipe work. He managed to start it after all the oil had drained out, rough and burning oil but running. was able to respond to throttle. we left it for another day of draining. Next day, car will not start. Took it to Rangie heaven...trust Damien with my chainsaw!...he gave me the bad news, she's stuffed. In too deep with finance to dump it, Damien hasnt got the time to rebuild for me so Im on my own. Got enough equipment to perform body off and I follow Christian on LR Time enough to have a go at rebuilding myself. I cannot get the thing to fire myself, it sounds like only one cylinder is down on compression but I'd like to know if its sensors or fuel or engine itself thats is causing it not to fire up.

The problem is. I have not been able to find a post from anyone in my predicament on any landy forum that I follow. Do I stump up for the GapIID? WHat will I find inside this thing when I lift the heads off, will it be rebuildable or do I just try and find a good S/H engine and replace? ANy advice appreciated. For me, Damien was my goto and he is just swamped out. Service bookings alone are at least three to four months in time. You book for your next service at same time as you get a service done. Resurrecting my old TDi300manual D1 as a backup so I'm not reliant on using my Wife's D4 Alpine.

Ouch, if it was me I would buy another D4 the same year and keep the old one for parts and a reminder to never lend a car to anyone again
People wonder why I would never even consider lending my Disco to anyone EVER
Personally I doubt it’s simple as a sensor

Damien says stuffed how? I'm guessing sensor/s coated in oil as it ran after runaway, so possibly something that the engine looks at to start but not while running or oil has since congealed or picked up particles to really read out of range. Could have even upset the EGR's, although I think this causes a warning or limp mode not non-starting.

EDIT: The more I think it about this the more I think it didn't runaway as it was able to be stopped. The extra oil affected something that changed the throttle response. Possibly from the high oil pressure getting past the turbo seals, causing black smoke on the exhaust side and coating sensors on the intake side.

RE-EDIT: I was talking to my mechanic and I think I got my theory the wrong way around. The high level oil has gone up the turbo drain and flooded the vanes resulting in exhaust side smoke and coated intake sensors.

A Gap tool will read codes for vehicles other than the registered vehicle.

What was stated as the damage?

If you decide to fit another engine which includes the turbos then at least a V3 Gap tool will be required to calibrate the turbine shut-off valve, or get a nearby workshop to do that.

Edit: Maybe it was obvious that the crank is broken. The engines often will run, sort of.

Doing 10,000 rpm for any period is outside of the Italian tune up category.

@Randlover, high oil level will not increase oil pressure.

I would be dropping the sump and checking the crank and bottom end, i would be surprised if the crank went after getting it running but you never know.
Can also remove the valve covers and rotate the crank by hand and see what the top end does.
Different scenario but the oil pump in my 2.7 D3 decided to divorce itself from the tensioner mount and although i feared for the worst, i just stripped it down checked everything.
1 bent exhaust cam and 2 cam cap bolts replaced, new oil pump and timing belt kit and 70k later still purring along.

My opinion for what its worth.

_Prior to throwing down on a new engine. i would be pulling all sensors that you can get to including the throttle manifold and associated sensors MAP et. Give them a good clean and see what happens. It cant hurt. Baz
