Yes, which is why I'm not convinced it actually ran away as they usually run to destruction, even if the ignition is turned off. You're right the only way to stop it is via starving it of air, and the only success story I'm aware of is a guy that stuffed his jacket in the air intake.

The throttle butterfly is not closed on engine shutdown and is the reason why I developed a solution to close the butterfly for 10 seconds when the ignition is switched off. Both my ex-D4 3.0 TDV6 and my ex-4.4 TDV8 L322 have been fitted with this mechanism.
I terminated a runaway TD5 by squeezing the top intercooler hose with multigrips. I was ready to cut the hose if that didn't work. That engine didn't suffer any damage.

Graeme, that is a great idea. A lot of large diesel gensets have air flaps to stop them as well as fuel cut off solenoids. Were you just lucky to have the pliers with you or carrying them for that specific purpose?

Thank-you everyone for your comments. I was incorrect before, Rangie Heaven is/was in Cranbourne. Damien is Peninsula Rangie in Frankston. I am awaiting the arrival of a G3 from British Offroad. Then, Im going to start on the sensors as well as clean out as much of the induction system as I can remove without lifting the body off.
Further evidence to add..My son never noted how high the revs got...lots of smoke, lots of revs and detonation and as he was getting it off the road...it dropped to idle and he was able to turn it off. Total time from runaway to stopped was about 30 seconds...to me, that is an eternity. He got the car towed, got it home, started draining the pipe work. lot of oil out of the rh intercooler pipe(from the turbo..boost pressure) as well as about half a cup or less out of the top intercooler pipe. Left it for about an hour with the pipes off, then started it up and ran it for one hour. Rough idle but smooth with a little revs with no resistence to throttle , as in, was responsive to throttle. A lot of blue oil smoke. This was as per Damien's instructions..so far so good...Left the pipes off over night. Next morning, car no go.
