Thread: Does my 2016 LR Discovery TDv6 need a new timing chain?

Dear fellow LR owners,

I recently bought a 2016 LR TDv6 discovery at 11xxxx km milages. I know that based from the age of the car it needs a new timing belt changing, but how do I tell from the running condition if it indeed needs one?

I went on searching on the internet there's one post that described a sign of needing a belt change that my disco has, which is "...The engine becomes erratic during slow idle periods due to the chain being worn out. The engine's vibrations become stronger than normal and you will detect this effect in your steering wheel or seat..." - I can feel that the car seat is vibrating when the engine is idling ( less vibration when it's running).

So folks, do you think it is time for a belt change? all input is appreciated.

(At the moment the car also needs a service, I'm going to get the car serviced and maybe ask the technician's opinion too.)

S/TDV6 engines have both belts and chains. Chains make noise when they or their tensioners/guides need changing. Belts do neither. I’ve never read of a belt snapping. Plenty of tensioners letting go but not a belt snapping. A new belt and and old belt are going to sound/feel the same until the engine stops turning. Just do it. Your wallet will thank you in advance.
