That is a Mitchell Bros tow Hitch - made as an alternative to the OEM plow for the D3/D4. There are heaps of posts on the forum.

Not to be confused with the McHitch Caravan coupling.

    All the bolts are captive.
I will have to remove the 12v sockets and the trailer harness so I can remove the bolt from the towing eye and both the bottom bolts are trapped against the chassis or bumper from what I could see.

I tried undoing all the bolts to see if there was enough movement to allow it to wiggle out but no such luck.

I couldnt detach the trailer harness by hand so will have to look into that further as well...

Ran out of time so put everything back together....

Will be a battle for another day

Or do you mean why do I want to remove it?

It's a pain in the butt interfering with the reverse beeps etc and at the moment the lr one would be fine for what I tow..

I did this after "upgrading" to the D4 style in case I have to change the spare over with a load on the ball.

The 3D printed shapes block the sensors picking up the permanently in place tow ball. Still works as normal and get solid tone 6 inches from rear of ball.

I think it is a better look than the high up hitch.

When they drop off eventually I'll try the half cut plastic covers over the sensors version.

My car came with the UK towball so I bought a D4 hitch when I bought the D3. I follow the manual, so the hitch is only ever in place when there is a load on. If I'm not towing the hitch is either in the Annexe, garage or rarely behind the drivers seat.

A pair of stick on furniture protectors on the inner sensors will stop that, its a much better and safer hitch then the factory one.
If you unplug the harness behind the left tail light you will be able to pull the plugs out if you plan on changing them to a flat 7/12.
